View Full Version : rear hub bearings gone ?

Today whilst weaving thru those traffic islands traffic engineers now like to sprinkle over our roads to slow us down i noticed a gentle knock noise coming from the rear of my D2 each time the rear end lurched left and then right. Could that be the rear hub bearings i thought ?
My D2 has done 278000k and the previous owner used to tow a caravan.
I've had a mild lift with new springs and shock absorbers installed 6 month ago at LRA at Thomastown in Victoria and the suspension bushes were judged as being okay then and I've only done 1000k since that time.
Any ideas anyone ?

Hub bearings won't make a knocking noise.
Check the exhaust mounts first. While you're under the car, make sure the rubber doughnut coupling on the rear propshaft is still intact. They're not fond of suspension lifts.

Check Watts linkage bushes also. Mine has done similar kms and they are worn.

I disagree!! (Unless D2 wheel bearings are different to D1's??)
I've had rear bearings fail, creating a definitely knocking/clunking sound. I had a mechanic take it for a drive, heard the sound and said he's never heard bearings make that sound.....until that day!
I've had front bearings fail that started jamming on the stub axle randomly pulling the vehicle to one side.
I'm not saying it's 100% bearings, but if you have a hub nut spanner, it's an easy job to check wheel bearings. Something to consider anyway....

Yep they are different, non adjustable, complete unit/ hub. They can make a clicking.

Since posting the original enquiry my mechanic has diagnosed the knock as worn ACE bushes - i can live with the them a little longer i think :D

That was my first thought, they only last about 70-100,000km... well for me at least. The other thing to check there (apart from the watts linkages which have a similar life as the ACE chassis bushes) is the rear down links between the sway bar and the axle as the ball joints can also pull apart.

I had the same problem, into a roundabout "clunk" same thing as I left the roundabout. A quite subtle clunk not loud. If you put the vehicle up on a hoist and look at the stabiliser (ACE) bar where it is mounted in the rubbers on the frame you will probably see that the bar will be polished either end of the bushing where the bar has been sliding back and forth about 4 or 5mm.It took me less than 1/2 hour to change them on a hoist at work.
