iPad cradle.

Hi all,
I have been playing with the idea of using my iPad as the mapping system in the Defender. Today I bought an iPad cradle from a shopping centre stall vender and an hour later took it back as it was a piece of the proverbial. Basically the poor man pays twice. So my first question is, could anyone recommend a suction cradle that is good quality and will hold the weight of the iPad and not jump around too much? And could anyone recommend a good mapping app or software download. I like the look of the HEMA maps app. Any thoughts?

I've been wondering the same thing. I can tell you from using an iPhone cradle that uses a suction cap onto the window - it was a POS. The window suction cap idea doesn't seem like a good idea at all after using one. I reckon it needs to be more solidly attached to the dash somehow. That's all I can offer so far....

For mapping software, we have VMS, but unfortunately haven't had an opportunity to give it a serious try out yet. The next camping trip keeps remaining in the future.... hopefully we get away soon and I can report back. :)

VMS is my next choice and I think you're right reference suction devices. I'm getting to the point were if it's not designed specifically for the job it's going to be used for, leave it alone. Best pay that little extra and get the proper job.

Don't forget mudmap, they (mud inc.) developed the VMS app and mud map is only 3 bucks, suggest you try that before spending lots and not be satisfied (difference with VMS app is that you get a bunch of maps included)

Or you can download Memory Map for free and get an idea of how that works. The Hema app is based on MemoryMap so you can purchase additional mapping from the MemoryMap store.

I've also noticed that the Hema mapping is now available on the PDF Maps app. The downside is the pricing is per map, but allows you to be a bit more granular rather than needing to purchase packs of maps you are never going to use. The Geoscience Australia 250K series are available and most are free. Parks Victoria is gradually loading the maps from their Park Notes.

The app will save tracks but doesn't allow you load routes. However there are some really useful maps showing up on the map store including some from smaller map producers like Meridian Maps that have only been available in Ozi format previously.
