1x Defender 130 with a few extras on board say 400kg

towing 1x trailer the trailer weight is 1 ton

the load on the trailer is 2.7 tons

is the `130 up to the task....

nope because your tow packages says 3500KG.....

1T+2.7T=3700kg...

Dont you just love dumbass australian regulations?

You need to move 200kg from your tailer load to the ute on the 130 to be legal in Oz but you still will have several hundred Kg's capacity spare in the 130 after that.
So: 3.5 total on trailer, 600kg's in the 130 which has a legal load of around 1300kg's so even if you add in the tow ball weight you should still be legal with plenty of room to spare.

My '95 130 factory handbook has a 4000kg tow rating listed (with coupled brakes).
The tow bar has 4000kg stamped on it.
There is a little yellow sticker on the A piller saying max tow load of 4000kg.

Id do it - but from experience towing a near 4tonne boat trailer you'll be starting in the low box...

Indeed i do love the regs, but my next question is, is it ok to do what i want to do? ( regardless of the law ) ie will the 130 struggle with it ....

The big platey I tow often enough when fully fueled (600L) and watered (200L) would be in just under the 4 tonne mark.
It only needs to be towed maybe 5km.
The trailer has triple axles with hydraulic calipers acting on all wheels, braking is no issue at all.
I dont bother taking it out of low range and keep out of 5th. Slow but okay for short distance. It doesnt seem worth changing the t-case ratio.

No way would I regularly choose to drive that sort of load for any real distance or in heavy traffic but the 130 will do it without any real worries.

It should do it ok just start of easy. Most on here have towed loads or pulled out other vehicles. I dragged a drowned 80 series landcruiser which had a 5.0 holden v8 and most of the fruit several k's back to the road so it could get towed to town in my 02 td5 110. Just make sure the load in the 130 is as far forward in the tray as possible and the trailer brakes/connections are good.
But being a longer wheelbase it should be better for towing than a 110/90.

I'm going to say NO....

because Im guessing that you're going to try to put angus on a car trailer and tow that with your deefer...

Im also guessing that the trailer wont be setup to do that safely in terms of authorised mass, the suspension for that high a load OR braking capability.

yes you can do it, (I've towed over 8T with fozzy for a short distance) but its not a black and white yes/no and even then the answers NO because its not legal.

I have towed a fully loaded troopie with a fully loaded camprite trailer along the hume highway once - I would say about 4 ton all up.

I did it in high and took it easy so no high speed run ups for the hills and although the 2011 130 did it I would not like to do it all the time. Hills I would usually do in 6th without noticing suddenly became 3rd gear struggles.

it also depends on how far you are going and when...

I do all my stupid heavy, barely legal towing either at stupid oclock in the morning when there is no other traffic OR during peak hours where the safe speed impositions of the vehicle configuration are rendered moot by the dead stop speed of the traffic anyway.

Ring ahead, line up a spare rear diff..

I'd give very serious consideration to trying for an opportunity load (assuming its a one way trip.)
