View Full Version : Trailer plug issues. Any ideas?

Had cause to use my trailer yesterday, so installed the tow bar and took off the cover to find a round plug. As my two trailers have square plugs, I head to autobahn and buy some round 7 pin plugs and proceed to wire them up as per the diagram on the packaging.
Test time comes and everything works a treat except the tail lights......
Trailer no 2, same problem. Yet they both worked fine in their previous format.
So, no.7 brown wire is tail lights, in the middle of the plug, and still nothing.
Anyone got any ideas what I might be missing? Or does it sound like a fault in the cars plug maybe?
Anyone know how I might test the car plug to see if the problem lies there. I noticed the plug has some kind of gel or resin in it just to make things harder to test.
Both trailers have 5 wires, and I am wiring to suit a 7 pin plug diagram, not the 5 pin plug diagram.

I believe the black round plug is wired for Europe, if you haven't got the 7 pin flat plug, then yours hasn't been changed for Australia.

The black round plug needs to be re-wired to suit Aust, I have been told it's only 2 wires that are different.

Problem is because in the UK we have two tail light feeds (one for each side). Here in Aus you only have a single tail light feed. This (http://www.towitall.co.uk/towbars/wiring.aspx) should help explain the way it's wired (12N wiring for the black plug).

My large 7 pin round black was already wired for Australia...if purchased in oz they should all be you would think. Has worked perfectly each time....only need the electronic box for trailer stability.
Sounds to be a wiring issue.
Why not try each cable with a multimeter ? I get readings on my pins ok.

Have you checked the fuse?
Located in the CJB behind the glovebox.

Update, no power from the plug on the car on the middle pin. Off to the dealers she goes.

Do you have electric brakes on either trailer?
Pin 5 on the Euro (N21) scheme is the right hand tail lamps which in Australia it is used for the electric brakes, you will also find that pin 2 on the Euro is fog lamps where in Oz it should be the reversing lamp.
