Has anyone used or have those new type of jawed spanners that are supposed to be quick action or ratchet?
The combination ring/open end type with the open jaw that is an odd shape!
If so are they any good?
I hope i have explained myself sufficiently!

Cheers for now,
Mick

mick, If I find out you're using those I am coming down and confiscating your landrovers.

use them at will on toyotas, they deserve no better.

I think Mick is talking about ratchet open enders, Not Metrinch.

Seen them in Kinchrome. Thinking about them.

Do you mean Gear Wrench?

Or those new ones from Sidchrome? Catalogue (http://www.sidchrome.com.au/products/8-piece-a-f-ratcheting-open-end-roe-speed-spanner-set)

yep, them...

the pawl pivot goes sloppy in short order and then they dont grip correctly.

they drive on a very small section of the crest of the nut faces and on anything but a pristine nut/bolt will take the edges off in short order. The sidchrome ones might last a while but I cant see them surviving much abuse.

theres another type that are a 3 piece asemmbly that work off of a cam action on the handle to release the jaw on the "back" stroke. these tend to get out of square and take a heap of room but have the advantage that when they are working properly the harder you pull on the handle the tigher they grip the nut/bolt.

the only "ratchet action" open ender I've seen live up to its promise are the ones that look sort of like a pipe wrench and work like a stud extractor.

this is the cheap version of the sidchromes

spring jaw spanners (great for rounded nuts/broken studs, bolts if you have the smaller ones)

and why buy a whole set when you could have a ratcheting shifter.

or this one.

Yes thats a similar one to what I mean.
They were in a catalogue that came in the mail last week.
Might have been "Kingchrome" when i think of it.
The idea sounds great, but they look to me like they would round the bolt head or nut off!

Cheers, Mick

These are the ones I saw

http://www.kincrome.com.au/web/catalogue/data/images/product/display/K3079_C.JPG

I can see their use. Quite often I find nuts in hard to get to places that once broken require 650 odd 1/8 turns to remove/refit the nut/bolt. Too tight to turn with the fingers, and is quite often where a ring or socket won't go on.

So long as this is what you use them for, just like a socket ratchet, and do your Breaking and Final Torquing with a proper spanner, should last no problems and not damage your nuts.

Good workshop practices beats blaming tools used in the wrong application every time:angel:

I allways go Sockets first, rings if I can't get a socket on, Open ender if all else fails or low torque applications.

we trialed a set at work...

they only work on 60 degrees (1/6 turn) (acutally a little bit more as you have to go back past the corner and then reapply and they are quite fat on the back side of the spanner.

on the few bits of kit we tried them on we didnt find anywhere that we couldnt get in with either a flat or offset ratcheting ringy or a socket on one of a few different drivers.

Id put my money on a set of indexed flex head ratcheting R/OE.
