Had my 2011 Puma in for the 40 000 km service today, Dealer rang and asked if I wanted the bearings repacked! At a bargin basement price of just short of $1000!

Almost fell off my chair! My response included words starting with G G F! I did my 1999 defender for $65 in parts and two hours labor by myself (with frendly hoist next door).

I guess I can pay for my own hoist in three bearing re-packs!

AND they'll probably use the original useless seals.

We do a fair few of these jobs, including new RTC3511 seals and all grease etc it comes out a LOT LESS than that!!! :o

Sounds like the $140 they wanted to charge me to change the windscreen wiper blades, or the $1,300 they wanted for new front springs, fitted of course.......

They did get $560 out of me to replace the front brake pads as they explained if I did not get them through them it would void my warranty.

At the end of the day I have got a lot more out of the warranty than I have paid but it has been a very selective process. Warranty is now over and I will not be going back. On one occasion I picked up the car, drove less than a block and had to take it back to ask them to please do up the wheel nuts on the front passengers side wheel.....

Yep,had the same issue with my 2010 130 tray top, they told me at the 40k service that because the ute was used to carry heavy loads and did a lot of off road work, it was required to have the bearings repacked, hit me for $640, total service cost was $1350! I said to them that of course I loaded it up and drove it off road...that's what I bought it for!!! why else would I have bought a defender? Service prices are a joke, and to top it off they held onto it for 2 days..and it's my work ute, with no loan car option, let alone a loan ute!

So why are you guys taking them to the dealers for services then?.. Is there no Land Rover mechanics near you??

because it pays to keep a car that is in warranty with a dealer....when the time comes to claim. If you keep your car with a dealer and you get issues after warranty Land Rover have been known to cover issues even major ones

40 k service with all bearings serviced and hub seals replaced, trans oils changed including main gearbox, all filters and brake fluid flush etc etc $1350 sounds about right, actually. main gearbox oil is $135 on its own.

It's a warranty thing, whilst I could have taken it to another mechanic I didn't want to risk a refusal on warranty for the bit more it cost. As I said before I was very selective really the only thing I paid for that I baulked at we're the brakes. Sure the cost of the services was a bit more but if you knew how much has been covered under warranty it was worth it and much of it was picked up and covered by the dealer during services.

Nope.. I don't buy the whole warranty thing.. If you use a reputable mechanic who is using the correct oils and parts then they have to honour the warranty whether they like it or not..

My first service with Land Rover was quoted at $1200... this was a bit of a shock to me as every other new car either Pete or I have had has received it's first service for free.. not that I am complaining about having to pay a fair price..

Yet my Land Rover mechanic charged me for exactly the same thing $350..

I also find the bonus of using an outside mechanic for services is that I feel they are more likely to point out warranty issues - which I then take to Land Rover to have repaired.. and not once have they even mentioned that I am not getting the car serviced there... in fact I was there to have some minor warranty repairs done last Friday and have the car booked in to have some more warranty work done in two weeks time.. now I am not saying that the guys at my local Land Rover dealership are doing the wrong thing but they obviously made a mistake when they told me that the pinion seal they had repaired was all fixed.. a quick look by my mechanic told me this was not the case.. twice..

It's a personal choice who you use and well I chose to use a specialised Land Rover mechanic because I felt that his opinion was unbiased and that his prices were more reasonable.. :)

From personal experience (and I believe dullbird has had similar) small warranty problems wouldn't be an issue but when you get them worth tens of thousands then you need all the support you can get and dealer servicing is the most reliable way.

As you said each to their own.

just had 40k service by independent LR specialist - $880. He has serviced from new and LR have honoured warranty issues - they have to as it is your statuary right by law. Latest warranty issue involved a $1400 tilt tray. Re having LR service during 3 yr warranty period to get an after warranty support - I dont want it as our LR mechanics are woeful and the extra cost for poorer work that has to be repeated several times for them to almost get it right plus with the inconvenience (I live a long way from the dealer) is not worth it. I will prefer to pay my independent guy and be able to trust the work

two hour to do the four corners is pretty slick....even with a hoist

Ok I am going to eat my words here, having pulled the front hubs apart today (well not me but I was there) my local dealer managed to cross thread both of the hub nuts, the passengers side needed a 6' piece of SHS welding to the hub socket.

Now admittedly this was during a warranty replacement of the front diff but having taken it off with Daniel I can not imaging how the hell they got the nuts on........

Maybe a landrover specialist is the way to go for servicing front he start.... mmmmm that humble pie tastes mighty nice :)

Don't buy that has to go to the dealer while under warranty for services either.

The son's Puma never went to the dealer for any services,it went to MR auto.

Just before it came out of warranty,it went to the dealer for a check & they did a heap of things to it including replacing the battery, rear axle seals & bearings, rear brake calipers, etc, etc, all at no charge.
They also replaced rear brake pads for around $230.

The dealers were excellent, this maybe because the have a very good relationship with MR.

As for my D4,i haven't decided where it will be going, but i am thinking MR auto as well, they charge half the price, and are twice as good.
