New D1 owner - Oil cooler pipes

Hi all,

just purchased a '97 300tdi, well pleased with it :D Love the landrovers (though i may be a bit biased being a pommie migrant ;))

234000 k's and just one prior owner who was pedantic about the servicing being done and at landrover at that.

prior comments on the servicing schedule state that there are oil leaks from the engine oil cooler lines and vacuum pump, after having a look at the moment the vacuum pump leak is miniscule, however the leaks from the oil cooler pipes are enough to warrant me getting them sorted asap.

Have read up on here and other forums about getting Pirtek to refurbish them. Whats the gen on this, do i just take them off and go straight to a pritek outlet and they do them there and then? Or is there likely to be a time frame on getting them done? It's just i am a good hours drive from my nearest branch. Anyone got an up to date price estimate on this too?

Anything I should be aware of when trying to take them off? A heads up on anything?

Taking them off is as obvious as it looks. You will lose some oil from the bottom of the intercooler/radiator when you disconnect the bottom line, so be ready with rags, or don't be over concrete. ;) When I took mine off, I put the finger of a rubber glove over it and put an elastic band around it. Stops it from draining oil everywhere while it's off...

I also am planning on getting mine re-made at some point because mine also leak, but unfortunately don't know where or how much it will cost to get done.

For the price they are in the UK you might as well buy some new ones.

That is quite cheap! Are they exactly the same as the originals though? I.E. Are they going to leak at some point too? If you get them fixed at Enzed or Pirtek, I feel they'd be good for life. Thoughts?

Yeah have looked at importing after market pipes from uk, they are dirt cheap, found them for about $32 the pair, plus freight which is extortionate:eek:, most will only post via courier instead of standard royal mail airmail, which i can kind of understand.

I do worry about their life span though, i think i'm tending towards getting them done at pirtek or enzed, though i suppose if the factory spec ones have only recently started leaking 14 years / 230k down the track might be worth just going with new ones?

Can anyone comment on the quality of these aftermarket pipes from compared to the factory fitted ones?

Have fitted aftermarket pipes to two 300tdi motors,not sure if they were OEM,both are leak free after 3 years.They were cheaper to buy from UK and came with O rings.Vacuum pump from UK also,make sure it is genuine Wabco.

DLS landrover parts in the UK on ebay are always very cheap I find and excellent on postage as well, have everything you could need for ya landy

Pirtek, my ones done by them went brittle and the hose cracked and wasn't leaking from the swage but the length of the hose instead. I reckon they used hose that wasn't oil compatible

Hi There,
You're in Adelaide I would give TRS a call and see if they can help. I got my pipes from them cheaper than I could buy them locally and that was including freight from SA. The important thing is the orientation of the pipes when you fit them to make sure you're not putting any additional torque on the pipes when you install them. Trying to twist the pipes to fit and putting them in places they don't want to go to will reduce the life more than most other things. Also look where they touch things, like maybe a part of the chassis or another static component, the engine does shake during some of its functionality, make sure nothing is to close to the pipes.
