Extract from Courier Mail, 30 May.
"Legendary bass guitarist Donald " Duck" Dunn was a household name through his 1960's recordings with Booker T & the MG'S & also a session bassist for Stax records, a specialist for blues and gospel- infused southern soul & Memphis soul music styles. Dunn also performed with rock & blues greats Muddy Waters, Levon Helm, Neil Young, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Wilson Pickett, Rod Stewert and Bob Dylan. Born in Memphis, Dunn taught himself by playing along with records, filling in what he thought should be there. His bass lines were very unique , having no formal training.
Some songs enlivened by his style were Otis Redding's respect , & I cant turn you loose, & Albert King's Born under a bad sign. Dunn was also the featured bass player for Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty's hit Stop draggin' my heart around, in 1981. He made two Blues Bro's films with with Levon Helm." ROCK ON, Duck, a rare talent. I saw him with Eric Clapton at the Hordern Pavilion in the early 80's. It was before the days of mosh pits and the like. They sounded great, I was about 4-5 meters from the band, and just about every band member was smoking or had a cig wedged in their guitar strings or somewhere. Times change hey!

I read of his passing two weeks ago, a great loss :( Booker T & The MG's and Ramsey Lewis were my favorite musicians as a teenage boy and they made some great music
I'm also surprised nobody has mentioned the passing of Robin Gibb, another great talent gone.

A definite oversight, the BG'S will be remembered in the same breath as the Beatles, Stones, & other legends. Came to Brisbane from England as kids, lived at Cribb Island, then Redcliffe. Played at the Redcliffe trots, noticed by a local radio station, the rest is history. At their first recording session in Brisbane, they were told it would be good to have some more songs to record to round it off, Barry went outside, and in a short time came back with the required number, just like that. Redcliffe intends to have a BG festival each year, hope it comes off. Even though they became rich & famous, they never forgot where they started, and visited their old hometown on a number of occasions. Bob

MUST SEE is for the original BLUES BROTHERS movie, fantastic stuff... (but Blues Brothers 2 (bb2000) was a terrible thing...)
Blues Brothers, I have a copy on VHS and Beta!! (sad isnt it, I also have my graduation video on beta and cant find a player since mine died (years ago!)
VHS will be the same very soon :( )
Donald Duck DUNN was playing with Murph and the magic tones, in the 'Armarda Ball room' his first line is:
(once you know its coming you'll hear it!)
"you're kidding"
(I won beer with that fact! :) ) :p
then same place:
"Jake ain't lying though. We had a band powerful enough to turn goat **** into gas-o-line." :D
later in the movie they're playing in "Bobs Country Bunker" Donald answers when they start to play RAWHIDE ,
"A, its a good country key" and in the carpark "Why not? if the **** fits wear it!"
my favourite line in the whole movie is from Elwood...
"It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
Jake answers, "Hit it!"
The Blues Brothers is far and away my favourite movie.. can you tell? :)
The idea formed from skits on "saturday night live" in america, and was written by Dan aykeroyd and john landis. Most (if not all) of the band members played in the Saturday Night Live band and were therefore already friends with James Belushi and Dan Aykeroyd..
absolute boatload of cameos, look for frank oz (screw), peewee herman(waiter at Chaz Paul), steven spielberg (cook county office), steve lawrence(in sauna), john landis (policeman-they broke my watch (1st time)), twiggy (as herself at servo), Charles Napier (tucker from good ol boys), Kathleen Freeman (jerry lewis movies) (the penguin(nun)),
Fantastic singing appearances by James Brown, John Lee Hooker, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. (Chukka Khan is also apparently in front of the chior but that I cant confirm is true!)
REECE get off your backside and hire this movie, its great!
(prepare to rock and to laugh - not a kiddies movie)
<<<EDIT>>> (HAD TO LOOK UP FOR FULL NAMES OF A COUPLE !)
Band members:
John Belushi as "Joliet" Jake Blues, (check the knuckles), Dan Aykroyd as Elwood Blues,(check the knuckles)
Donald "Duck" Dunn, bass guitar and pipe!, Steve "the Colonel" Cropper, guitar and vocals, Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin, trumpet and vocals, Murphy "Murph" Dunne, keyboard, Willie "Too Big" Hall, drums, Tommy "Bones" Malone, saxophone, Tromebone and vocals, "Blue Lou" Marini, saxophone and vocals. Matt "Guitar" Murphy, lead guitar
