I have managed to find a weak spot in my Disco windscreen twice! Driving along the Albury bypass at 100k a sedan flicked up a stone hitting my screen right between the wipers about 10 mm up from the lower sill. A 15 cm crack appeared to my astonishment :o. In 39 degree heat, outside and the A/C full on, the crack grew, heading northwest! Thankfully I ticked the windscreen replacement on my insurance!:) And the screen was replaced with an original LR screen. My wife was driving to Shepparton on the GV hwy 2 months later, when in a 60 zone a car flicked up a stone which hit in exactly the same spot (like winning tattslotto twice...it doesnt happen!). The bloody crack appeared again. I only get one screen per year so I'm waiting patiently to get it replaced. Interested to hear if I'm the luckyest Disco owner in AU or it's just bad luck?
Shane.

My recently sold D2 had the original screen after many hits by stones. My work van is on it's 4th screen in 3 years, and it now has 3 large cracks in it again:mad:
Last time it was replaced, about 6 months ago,the windscreen guy told me most,if not all modern vehicles have very thin screens. He said the D2 screen actually is so heavy it needs two people to lift it on.It would be twice the thickness of the hi ace screen.
Didn't ask about the D4,so dunno if it is thinner than the previous models.
Oh,my D4 has no cracks on the screen, but it has only 4k on the clock.

I travel a 90k round trip on a major highway to and from work each Mon to Fri and have had my D4 windscreen broken once! There are a lot of trucks carting lump iron ore and spillage from these trucks is not unusual even though they cover their loads. It seems to me that when I am passing or going the opposite way they elect to drop a few stones just to make life a little exciting. I also have a D2 (SWMBO truck) and it has suffered the same fate. I hope I dont put the mocker on myself but have been able to get away with one windscreen per insurance year on each vehicle. From the size of the stone (rock) that hit my D4 I concluded that the windscreen was as strong if not stronger than that of my D2! The rock seemed bloody large when it was coming my way! Glad I was not paying directly for the replacement windscreen as Novus in Geraldton told me the screen alone was $1200.00 (LR Part) and there were no after market screens were avaiable for D4's with rain sensors. From where I sit you have just been plain unlucky!

I have had a couple of screens replaced in the D3 by the local windscreen place, $440 a pop. The rain sensor does successfully transfer between screens which saves some dollars.

I have also had a crack appear on the drivers side just above the wiper arm in the clear section of the glass.
I then went to LR dealer as a I thought it was a defect but found it was a stone chip which started in the black area between the wiper blade arm and the trim at the rear of the bonnett in the black section of the screen.
There would be no more than 5 ml gap between bonnett edge and wiper arm.
I have not had a quote to fix as yet as I also have one a year on insurance and not due until November 1 so waiting a little before I rush in - still safe and the crack has not cracked into driving vision yet !!!
Will be interested to see the price and if can I demand a LR screen or do I have to take a non genuine replacement screen. ??
I have rain sensing so it would have to have a replacement windscreen the same and I have only travelled 8 000 Kilometres.

I have to admit that I was keen to tick the annual "free" windscreen replacement option when arranging the insurance. I have a heated windscreen (thousands of tiny wires embedded in the glass). I wonder what that these cost to replace and who is qualified to do it.

Any O'brien Glass outlet or O'brien authorized repairer should have the qualifications and skills.

I have had 3 star cracks in the windscreen of my D4, all in north Qld. When I had the first one I got a quote from a well known national windscreen repairer, $139.00, as my son-in-law was having a windscreen on his leased vehicle replaced there the following day. I then got a quote from a local independent repairer, $55.00 or two for $77.00.
I had it fixed locally but unfortunately got another crack the next day. The following day I went back to the local bloke who only charged me $22.00 as he said it was close enough to having two repaired at the same time. There are some decent small business people out there!
Traveling regularly on northern and central Qld roads my son-in-law averages two windscreen replacements per year in Pajero .
I have since bought a Ufixit kit (and one for my son-in-law) which works a treat.

Hey Andy, My vehicle is in Melbourne and my first replacement was an original LR screen with the rain sensors. I read somewhere that these cost about $1200, so I too am happy I ticked the once per year replacement on my insurance. There must be a large weak spot just above the bottom sill (under the wipers). On the same trip she got another stone causing a star crack. She is doing the country run again today so I'm waiting for the call to say the whole screen is broken, it's raining, what do I do??

I cracked a d4 windscreen last year. I have rain sensor and high beam assist. I ticked the windscreen option with GIO Insurance and glad i did. I rang GIO they got windscreen obriens to call me. They can only use the original windscreen on this vehicle i was told. Then also that their mobile vans can not fit them. It had to be left for the day at one of two repair centres in Sydney. So i figure they are not a simple or cheap windscreen.
I previously had a windscreen cracked by the installer of my safari snorkel. He showed me the invoice for the landrover screen and it was $850. He had a local guy install it and it took him 3 goes gefore i had no leakes from the top edge of the screen.
The lesson, make sure you tick the windscreen box on your insurance and get a specialist to install a new windscreen.

Me and my big mouth. I should have said nothing in the last post I made on this subject.
Coming home tonight, as usual an iron ore carrying road train going the other way dropped its normal one or two stones and 'hey presto' got me right between the wipers:o. Yep my nice new windscreen is now decidedly second hand. I have used my annual insurance claim so I am wondering if I can hang out for the insurance year to come around (Sep). The replacement screens are not cheap :(.

I feel your pain, my insurance clicks over tomorrow and my crack has grown legs and a tail in the last 2 weeks. There seems to be a major weak spot right between the wiper blades. Time for you to grab a tattslotto ticket, you seem as lucky as me. :D
