I am looking at buying a discovery 1 tdi auto. I would like to know what you guys think the problems are with these trucks and what to look out for when looking at trucks for sale. It will be a weekender getaway vehicle and not a daily driver. Any help would be very grateful. I want an auto so the misses can drive also.

Great choice. I've had one for 3 years and put 70,000km on it and it's going great.
Check for rust in the chassis and the floors (if possible) and all the other stuff you'd usually check for in used cars.
Timing belt should be done every 80-100k km.

Yes, good choice.
Have a read in the Pinnacles ==> Discovery ==> Disco 1 section. The same question has been asked many, many times - so you should find some good answers there.
The 300tdi hates getting hot, and the factory temp gauge stays in the middle until its too late. Get the radiator rodded straight away (unless you've got a receipt to show its been done or replaced recently). A radiator flush wont do - it needs to be rodded.
Also get yourself some sort of temperature monitor or low coolant alarm. I personally like the Engine Watchdog, but there are others. Keep the cooling system in good condition and give it regular oil/filter changes and it should give you much happiness.
