View Full Version : Radiator and clutch

After only 120K I need to replace the clutch (2000 Td5) ... it's been slipping for a while now and I kinda ignored it so I may need to replace the flywheel too!
The radiator has sprung a leak too so that's getting done at the same time ... (hope my mechanic has a payment plan)
My questions are ... what sort of K's have other members changed clutches and are there any other mods I should think about whilst all these bits are off my D2?
Thanks

I had one clutch change in just over 300,000ks, went at 90,000ks, I looked at a few options but went with the standard replacement, the flywheel is a dualmass flywheel and I reckon it will be fine, they are a tough flywheel.
Exedy make a heavy duty clutch with a single mass flywheel, they aren't cheap though, single mass flywheels are supposed to be better for towing, the downside is a little extra noise at idle.
Radiator, this is one of those things that will go again, in probably the same time frame too, only solution is a custom made one.
Prices, you should pay anymore than
(standard replacement)
$300 to $400 for the radiator + fitting
$400 to $500 for the clutch + fitting
Heavy duty clutch will be $1800 plus.
Hope this helps,
Baz.

Thanks Baz!
I'm more than happy to replace both clutch/flywheel and radiator with standard. My mechanic has provided me with a great price too (and I wouldn't use anyone else even if they were cheaper) ...

If you do go for a solid flywheel I would only use Rakeway. I use that in mine and another D2 I look after.
I think cost landed for the 2 I have had, complete with the flywheel, clutch cover and plate, release bearing and bolts was about 1100$ for an option 2 from Rakeway.

From memory the option 2 at the time was about 440pounds and shiping was 250pounds.
They do them from 400 to about 800 pounds depending on the clutch option.
Very nice bits of kit.
As you say the noise is noticable but not too bad.

I think there'll be a wide range of answers because clutch wear is highly dependent on use (city vs country), loading and user (agressive vs easy, ride the clutch?). I've done 132k so far without a problem (touch wood!)

We just bought a classic 2004 manual. Does the clutch always feel a bit soft?, not very hard, like it has to much power assist in it?
The clutch was supposedly replaced just 10,000k previously and I am comparing it with my Navara's clutch. To me it just feels dull, kinds doughy, not firm and crisp.
Does'nt slip though. I tried in high gears at low revs and it pulls nicely.
Thanks
