On advice of some nice people over in the Communications section I have bought myself a new mobile phone (Motorola Defy). Now working through setups etc and have come to the WiFi and Bluetooth sections. Neither will work with my house computer systems but the Wifi works OK down at Maccas and the Bluetooth will talk to my old phone so issues are with my laptop and Modem.

Bluetooth
The phone happily pairs with my laptop and the phone appears as a device on the laptop. Likewise the laptop appears on the phone as paired. However when I try to send send something from the phone to the laptop it is unsuccessful and likewise when I try to do it from the laptop it says there is no bluetooth device in the laptop (yet it happily paired) - both devices are visible. I can happily send images between the new and old phone so the issue is with the laptop.

Ideas appreciated

WiFi
When I try to connect to my modem by WiFi it connects long enough to get the security code in but then the modem crashes and stops transmitting - then the phone disconnects, the modem starts coming back to life and the phone trys to reconnect causing the modem to drop out again - when I switch off WiFi on the phone the modem comes back to life and the other computers in the house can continue surfing the net - the modem is a Netcomm nb6plus4w.

So I went down to Maccas and the phone connected to the Maccas WiFi no issues so the issue is something to do with my modem.

Ideas appreciated.

Thanks

Garry

Weird problems Garry. You haven't got the wifi hotspot activated on the phone have you? Also turn off bluetooth on the phone while you troubleshoot the wifi just to take that out of the picture as bluetooth networking of some sort may be screwing with you. Other than that I'm drawing a blank. :)

No I didn't, but have been looking at it today.

Bluetooth - I was able to pair, connect and transfer data between the other blue tooth devices so not an issue with the phone - nothing was able to connect with the laptop. Devices can pair with the laptop and are displayed as devices but when it comes time to send or receive it has a dummy spit and says it the bluetooth adaptor cannot be found so I think the laptop has a bluetooth issue. But I did put a bluetooth dongle in my PC and did have the same issue - so maybe my issue but I can get other devices to talk to each other.

WiFi - I went to the Computer Fair an bought another modem and all fixed. The old modem would run the four computer WiFi network but did not like the phone - the new one works fine and now my internet is about 5 times faster than it was :) so the modem must have been on its last leg.

Glad to hear you're getting on top of it.

I've got the older NB8W, and I reckon it's on its way out too....:(

Thanks - the same sort of thing also happened with my previous modem so it looks as if they only last a few years and die a slow death.

Youtube vids now play without having to manually buffer them for a while at the start.

Speed is fine for me, up to 3MB per sec, but I get dropouts that last from minutes to days.
Sometimes just WIFI drops, other times WIFI is fine, but no net access from my desktop PC.

Reboot........... re-set, whatever. Nothing works. Then out of the blue it's all good again.

Try deleting any old BT pairings that may be in the laptop, I had the same issues with my phone/laptop came good when I deleted previous pairings/attempts.

Sounds like a Telstra exchange issue.
