Hey everyone,
there is going to be another fairly rare event in the heavens in the coming week.
The transit of Venus, i.e. Venus will travel between the earth and the sun.
Wed 6th June starting around 8:15 a.m. in Eastern Aust. Transits of Venus occur
every 243 years, with pairs of transits 8 years apart. It can be viewed safely in a
webs cast. Go to http://www.transitofvenus.com.au/HOME.html (http://www.transitofvenus.com.au/HOME.html%20for%20more%20info.) for more info.

Thanks for that, we will certainly never see one of these again in our lifetimes. Could this finally be the dawning of the age of Aquarius, which I have been waiting for since the 70's? Must get the paisley shirt from the bottom of the budgie cage, drag out the Janis Joplin records, and enjoy the moment. Bob [how did that song go? oh yeah " one, two three, what are we fighting for? don't know, don't give a damn, next stop vietnam.... memories]

The transit of Venus across the Sun, is one of the rarest cosmological events you'll ever see. In early June, Venus will pass between the Earth and the Sun for the last time for more than 105 years. The next transit will not happen until 2117.
The transit will begin at 22:09 UTC (5 June 2012) and finish at 04:49 UTC (6 June 2012). Your guide to the transit of Venus › Science Features (ABC Science) (http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2012/05/23/3508538.htm'topic=space)

Don't forget to put your protective glasses, I heard that welding masks can do the trick. What do you think?

I had a look at it a while ago thru my welding mask.
Saw the Sun ok but could not see Venus, which is not surprising because i have cataracts on both eyes and cant focus very well anyway.
Even on the computer I have to zoom in to enable me to read the text.
But history will record that I looked at it, eh. Ta Da.
Cheers.
Robert.

Are you sure? It finished about 4 1/2 hours ago... I suspect you have a pic of a sunspot there. I had full sun just after lunch 5 1/2 hours ago and could see the planet's disc clearly without magnification, better with a welding glass taped to a 7 x 35mm monocular (binocular with one cap on!) then nearing the end of the transit.:)

Bee Utey, you are completely right. This can't be Venus since as you said the transit finished 8 hours ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Could it be a solar spot as you said or have I discovered another celestial body transiting through the sun????? :D

Presumably an artefact of the camera processes or
1. US spy satellite, you'll get a visit from the men in black any day soon....
2. Flyspeck? It's rather out of focus.
3. Sunspot, there were some very round looking ones, remember also this is on the limb of the sun.
4. Actully it's Venus, having a bit of nookie around the back while no-one's looking?:p
