View Full Version : Check Engine Light - Code Readers

I drove down to Melbourne and back from Canberra yesterday - the 1350km went perfectly with the car preforming great.

I arrived home last night and parked the car and left it until this afternoon. I started it to move it and the check engine light came on immediately on start (never went off from when the ignition went on). It was not on when I switched off last night. The car drives OK and I have gone through both soft and hard resets with no success.

Any ideas? I guess the answer will be anything so that leads to code readers.

What is a cost effective machine that will read and clear codes - the local stealer will probably want somewhere near $100 just to put it on the computer.

FaultMate FCR - cost? Suppliers in Aust? Overseas - Blackbox Solutions?

Nanocom - cost, suppliers etc

Scangauge - I had one until lightning struck next to the car and fried the scangauge - $160 - and will read basic codes and clear them.

Other options??

Thanks

Garry

Hey mate,

I was only emailing blackbox about the fault mate FCR the other day, unit
Was $308 AU and delivery to Aus was between $38 and $69 AUD depending on postage times.

Can't answer the rest unfortunately!

I think you'll find the IID Tool is from someone else - not Black Box - here's the link, IIDTool for Land Rover - GAP Diagnostic (http://gap-diagnostic.com/products/iidtool.html) - cheers.

Ordered a Faultmate so we see what codes are in the system. I expect it will be the left EGR. I had this code (and check engine light) last year and was diagnosed by the Scangauge. The fault was not the EGR itself but the connector - pulling it apart and cleaning etc fixed it up and the Scangauge was able to clear the codes and extinguish the check engine light.

Hopefully I just have the same issue and the faultmate will clear the codes.

Good luck with your Faultmate Gary - and I should add that if anybody decides on the IID tool they will have to contend with the very slow (and disinterested) "service" from Britparts....must be a really good business that can ignore e-mails from people who clearly want to spend their money with them !!!

BBS has been great - immediate response to emails and provided plenty of information to base decisions on.

Been my experience too - they seem to have got their act together in terms of purchase and delivery. Hopefully the after-sales service is as good.

I expect it will - they said they could not send the unit off until Monday as they have to test it first to make sure it was serviceable - being optimistic I took that to mean it was the stage of the QC process prior to sending off - though a pessimist might think they had a bad run and this just make sure the one they are sending was not a dud.

In either case it should be serviceable when delivered.

Check engine light - with no engine performance issue is annoying though.

Yep - BBS is great to deal with, Britparts could learn a lot from them !!

Hi guys!
We at GAP-Diagnostic provide support for the IIDTool - and we try! We really do.

If you have any questions/comments/gripes etc, please don't hesitate to contact us directly either at support@ or GAPTeam@our web site .com.
Home - GAP Diagnostic (http://gap-diagnostic.com/) (please no PMs - not on Aulro too often... no time, unfortunately).

Please let us know if you have any sort of trouble locating a dealer. We will make sure you are taken care of. (alternatively googling 'IIDTool' will net 3-4 online shops. I know that not all ship to oz, but most do. And the IIDTool is not expensive to ship).

Colin (BBS) is a good guy and he has some very good products. When you shop for a product like this, you do need to take items like support into consideration.

Ultimately you'll need to compare price, functionality and features and make a decision. You will not go wrong either way. :D

cheers,
Steve

Hi Oldsalt,

You are right (OOPs, sorry Steve) The manufacturer was GAP Diagnostics.

I had a similar experience with a Rovacraft.Surprising pricing & long delays.

After I contacted Steve, everything was sorted with remarkable ease.

Great backup for the Activation and for the latest (free) firmware updates months after purchase.

Landed price was about $400.00 Aud from a UK Retailer. Delivery was about a week.

cheers.

G'day Richard - I got an e-mail from Rovacraft this morning (amazing how a few negative comments about Britparts on this forum elicits a quick response) - I answered them straight away and am now awaiting an answer re cost - it'll be interesting to compare with buying from the U.K. - I'll let you know the outcome.
cheers

Well.... I sent my e-mail inquiry to Roavcraft (in answer to their introductory e-mail as the local supplier) as to the price of the IID Tool at 9:32 this morning and as yet have received no reply ... ah well a few more of my dollars will be off to the U.K. tonight ... and local retailers wonder why we buy stuff overseas !!!!

My Faultmate got held up in the Post Office in Cyprus for a couple of days so have not yet received it as yet - has been cleared in Sydney so should get it Monday or Tuesday.

As a result I have not been able to codes that have caused my check engine light to come on. Initially the car still ran fine but two days ago while driving there was no response from the throttle for about 5 seconds at a stop sign then drove off all OK (this is not the usual pregnant pause that these cars have).

Last night started the car - put it into reverse and the car started rolling down the hill - engine was on at idle but no response from the throttle - after about 10 secs all was OK and car drove fine.

Today - started and the idle was very lumpy (normally very smooth) and again throttle response was negligible - revs did rise from idle to about 950 but no more. After about 10secs lumpiness was gone, full throttle was available and car drives fine. The car is not in limp mode.

I appreciate I need to have the codes read - monday or tues but any advise on what might be going on would be appreciated.

Cheers

Garry

Anyone know which code readers work on 2010 model TDV8 Sport? I see the IID unit does not. Figure something like this may be pretty handy if out of town.

For the 2010 models, Faultmate FCR (smaller unit) or MSV2 (full editing capabilities) are probably the best two for the individual owner. Consider the Autologic if you have multiple vehicles (not cheap though!).

Thanks. Car has been at dealers now for 3 days. At least they picked it up, and will deliver it back. Still working on why battery goes flat. They are replacing upper tailgate switch as per forum/my request. Alternator tests fine. Lucky I am away and don't need it! In total it has been at a dealers now for nearly two weeks trying to find the fault.

I received my Faultmate today and it showed up heaps of codes in all sections - mainly communications errors - once cleared they are gone.

The engine ECU is more problematic.

Showed up the following:
P0490 - EGR Circuit Control
P0405 - EGR Sensor A
P1335 - EGR Position Sensor
P0140A - EGR Sensor C
P1623 - Immobilizer Code Failure
U0164, 0155, 0102 - Lost Communications with A/C system, instruments, Tfr Case
P140E - EGR position sensor C

On clearing the ones that remain are
P0405 - EGR Sensor A
P0140A - EGR Sensor C - Circuit Low - General Signal Failure.

The engine check light has gone out but did come back on once and then removed.

I take it that EGR Sensors A and C are basically the sensors in each of the EGRs.

So I can assume that my EGRs are on the way out? :(

At this time I am wishing Ean's experiment with EGR was blanks was successful. I also want to thank Ean for giving it a go and keeping us up to date with success and failure.

Thanks Ean

And thanks to everyone else.

Cheers

Garry

Hi Garry , what sort of Faultmate did you get the FCR or the extream msv2 i think it is , If it was the FCR for RRS are you happy with it and was ease of ordering fairly painless . Rgds Al

I just got the basic FCR - just reads and clears codes - you cannot manipulate any systems.

I got it from Black Box Solutions in Cyprus. Ordering was straight forward off their web site. Postage was a bit expensive but I guess that tends to be the norm these days - order was delivered in just over a week after the order was placed.

I have been reading and watching this thread with interest as I am considering purchasing a diagnostic tool for my D4 so have have been reading what ever I can find, asking questions and searching other Land Rover sites.

One of the better sites that I, along with many of our members, often look at is DISCO4.COM. Last night I found an article on there that contains all the information that you need to know about the Faultmate (both the MSV-2 Extreme and the FCR). Most of the answers to questions raised and information is directly from the principle the manufacturer, Blackbox Solutions.

There are links to other posts and Youtube videos and a revelation of the next generation of Blackbox magic 'Genesis' on-line support.

Please see link below:

DISCO4.COM - View topic - Faultmate MSV and MY2012 Disco (http://www.disco4.com/forum/topic71579.html)

I found it well worth my time to read through all of it and the linked posts and watch the youtube clips even though there is a fair bit there.

Heaps and heaps of info.

And the last word from Colin was that "we have also now bought the CCF edit capability right up to date, including adding all the new stuff for 2012 MY vehicles".

Emailed BBS twice but no reply , Garry did the FCR arive by Ausralian Post or Courier . ??

My experience was exceptionally good as far as communications go.

It was shipped via DHL but when it arrives in Sydney it is transferred to Aust Post for delivery in Aust

After being despatched for some reason it sat at the couriers for a couple of days in Cyprus and when it arrived in Australia it again sat at the couriers for a couple of days before being transferred to Aust Post - nevertheless it was delivered in 8 days from despatch to delivery. BBS was very quick in sending it off and they emailed me the process.

Try sending a AULRO PM to Colin at BBS his AULRO name is BBS Guy

Also via email try Hayley at admin@blackbox-solutions.com

and Vicki and Colin can be contacted on info@blackbox-solutions.com (admin@blackbox-solutions.com)

Yes I thought $80 for a .5kg satchel was a bit high.
