Hi, I am tossing up between a Disco2 TDI 5 cylinder or a Defender 2.4. I was wondering what sort of fuel economy would be like in the Defender. I am purchasing a 22ft caravan. I realise towing would alter the economy but I am looking at just driving it around without the van. I am a pensioner so money would be tight.
Hope someone can help.
Thankyou

My 110 Defender 2.4 has averaged 10.19l/100k over the last 3 months. 90% of that would metro driving, including towing 5% of the time.

I've found the fuel economy is better if you "drive it", if you try and take it easy the fuel consuption is worse.

[QUOTE=one drives horses;1698490] I am purchasing a 22ft caravan. /QUOTE]

That is a big van for 2.4 or 2.5 4/5cyl to tow.

I have off road Coromal that is 5 meters, I wouldn't tow anything larger than that for an extended period of time with my PUMA.

Even at that size you are making it work. I think a 22ft is equal to nearly 7meters, that is a big ask.

Just my thoughts

My trayback runs at 9.5l /100km around town. Bit more at high speed. Haven't done a long trip since changing the head gasket but definitely has more power.

Mine varies from around 10.5l/100 to 12..5l/100 unloaded with a decent mix of town and highway driving.

FWIW I just got an old defender and am wrapped with fuel consumption and I have a 200tdi. I feel it is up to towing most things I threw at my bronco. It won't be as rapid but who cares. Long term I don't know but I think it will do fine , best of luck.

My trayback 130 will use on average between 11-13l/100km virtually all highway driving. it will do better if i sit at around 90kmh, but out here that rakes forever to get anywhere... so i normally sit at 110.

Thats like me,mine does better at 90 but I want to have a holiday on the coast not on the highway.Last trip to Broome I did nothing but overtake bicky dippers sitting on 70. Pat

Possibly the only vehicle on earth with better urban figures than open road... One of the small downsides of having the aerodinamics of a garden shed!:D

My 90 gets comfortably under 10l/100km around town, but you have to good and steady staying under 105km/h on the open road to get anything better than 11l/100km

I tend to drive on the revs in 6th gear rather than the speedo and when cruising the "sweetspot" is just on the 2000rpm mark in mine.

Cheers,

Lou

My Tdi when new used 10 or less per 100,the TDCi has never got near that. Pat

My Puma is doing low 10's with steady driving and upto 14 towing the work trailer which weighs about 1200 kg. I'm happy with that

My 110 puma use to do around 10-11 loaded on a trip and round town, my current 130 single cab does around 12-13l/100km,however it weights 2.9 ton so hard to compare. The consumption is pretty good for a large ute, but the ridiculous 75litre capacity is a joke, wish LR would wake up to this..

It would have cost them an extra 50 dollars to change the tank to 100ltres when they brought out the TDCi,as you say 75 is a waste of time. Pat

Did the fuel economy improve with the remap?. Pat

the best I got out of my 300tdi on a 700km trip with 80% of that loaded tray full of concrete blocks was 10/100. That was city, suburb and hwy driving.

My 2.8tgv is returning about 13-14/100 with a 1.8t dual axle trailer on. Not only the weight but my COD is very bad due to a tray back and then a long draw to a 8x5 tradies boxed in trailer. Not bad and not much would return that without spending $40k or more...

Pat, my fuel economy drasticly improved when I added to much oil. For about 8 weeks I didnt even fill the tank once :D

Fuel economy on mine improved from 11l/100km to around 9.4l/100km after a BAS remap.

I drive with the roofrack permanently on.

:eek::eek:Mines done 9000km using 12-14 l/100km with full length roof rack and 300kgs in the back. The old 300tdi was better in this respect but.......the tdci cruises at 120 and has "alot" of power round town.

Cheers

Thats the way I look at it,my Tdi used 10ltres per hundred where's the TDCi use's 14 but the TDCi eats the Tdi,the Tdi's working hard keeping up empty when the TDCi has the camper attached. Pat

10.5 all day, everyday as far as mine goes.
Had the odd 9.5 and 11 every now and again. I put that down to Human error.

To be honest, I don't know because I had it remapped before I took it home from the dealer. I bought it with 30000klms on the clock from a WA used car dealer. I am more than happy with performance and the economy.
