Replacing the in car audio

D2 is finally getting ready for some proper offroad action, but at the same time i'm looking to replace the standard radio/ tape deck as it's starting to give me the ****s, not working half the time, no backlight, etc.
Looking at getting just a cheap mp3 connectivity type head unit put in, down at supercheap or auto one.
I understand that there is an adapter piece required to fit them?
Would the stores have these, or would I have to supply this?
If so, where do I get them and at what cost?

There should be a Aerpro harness stand near where the stereo's are. It should be ISO to whatever brand you buy. (Pioneer /Clarion etc)

When you take the old one out - search remove radio ( For either D1 or D2) you'll find those ISO ( Int'n standard ) plugs - and another harness from there to the old radio.

Would I have to let whichever mob i get to do it know of this or should they be able to figure it out themselves?

You should be able to fit and wire it yourself!

As a heads up, I had the factory CD player replaced under warranty a couple of times (well, at least once) because the CD wasn't ejecting properly, and likewise when I replaced the unit the same prob continued. Dust was doing it. I then found a dust proofed unit and have not had a problem since. With my one, a cover comes down and covers the CD slot to keep the dust out. Its been good for a lot of years now.

In general terms there are usually two parts to an add on radio harness.

the first is vehicle to "ISO". the second is "ISO" to specific brand of radio you're installing (ie ISO to Sony etc).

If you're lucky, the radio harness from the radio you purchase uses an "iso" standard plug, so you only need the first bit (vehicle to "ISO").

If you cant be bothered buying extra bits/harnesses, just decipher (or web search wire colours for) the existing factory radio plug, and adapt this (ie solder) into the harness that comes with the radio.

In australia, the easiest to find brand for these two adaptor harnesses seems to be aerpro, however its website doesn't list anything for land rovers. Car Audio Accessories, Car Antennas, Wiring Harnesses, Rear-View Camara: AERPRO (http://www.aerpro.com/) .Autobarn generally seems to stock this brand from what i recall.

In the UK, there seems to be more land rover leads available, this place has a good list and you can use the listed parts numbers to look for other ebay stockists etc if you prefer. Land Rover Discovery car radio installation adaptors (http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/car_radio_adaptors.aspx?id=140)

I havent personally installed into a D2 however, so cant offer you any specific info there. I have in recent times replaced the head unit in my d1.

I soldered the lead that came with the new head unit into the d1's factory wiring.

I chose to use a Phillips unit (CEM250), with USB and bluetooth for phone (and music mp3s on phone) -$250 for unit, installed by me. I have installed exactly the same unit in my VW car (after being happy with it in the d1), as dont like to remember different button locations etc: Now exactly the same for both vehicles! The bluetooth feature is great, as as soon as radio turns on, it finds my phone, auto-connects and I do hands free through the radio (accepting incoming or making outgoing) from then on if needed. I can the play tunes through the a USb stick in front of unit, or on phone memory card. Unlike the cds, such usb/bluetooth tunes never slip.

Is there any issue with a gap?
Seeing as some of the head units aren't exactly the same size as the original, do you need to buy/ fabricate some sort of fill piece?

I replaced the tape player in my D2 with a newer one (MP3, iPod etc) and it just slots in fine. It will sit back into the dash a bit further than the standard one but it looks fine.

As for the wiring, as has been said already, all you need is an ISO adapter to whatever you are buying. Just a tip, get (or make if they don't have ready made ones) the shortest adapter you can, it gets a bit cluttered up there in the dash.
