View Full Version : How many ks has your D1 300tdi done?

Since these 'how many kms' threads seem to be a trend, I thought I'd start one on the D1 300Tdi.
My 'George' has done 320,000, but the engine, which is a replacement, has done about 270,000kms. Its had two head gaskets and is running fine. Ancillaries replaced include the water pump, injector lift pump and radiator. With thorough servicing, I expect it to keep going for a long time.

I used to know a teacher at Broken Hill who had 840,000 original K's on his, that was two years ago,The Rumbles at Modern Motors used to have a workshop D1 with over 500,000 and that was four years ago. Pat

That's interesting. I've been told that, if the cooling system and other bits are kept up to the mark, the 300Tdi can go for a very long time, as they are relatively simple. Hope its true as we plan to keep ours forever, as a touring vehicle.

My Tdi in my defender has near 500,000k's on it and it gets the cooling system flushed every year, never had an issue with it. Pat

Good to hear about all the 300 000 km and over 300.s, seems a few have done a head gasket and some have received a head replacement. It's got me wondering though whether the headgasket and/or head should be done as a preemptive strike between 250 and 300k? Next year we are planning on a Canning, Anne Beadell and Simpson run and maybe I aught to do it at the same time as the rubber band?

Our original engine was going beautifully until that dreaded fault, the original cracking overflow bottle, cracked and drained the engine of coolant. The upgraded bottle is fine.

I'm expecting to be putting far fewer kms. on the Disco form now on as we've bought a little Yaris for commuting so the Disco will spend more time resting between outings.

Mines got 275k km on her now.
Full engine rebuild @ 273k due to previous owner cooking the engine.
If only he'd purchased an Engine Saver he would probably still own the vehicle.
LR might as well of painted the dash temp gauge on.
As mentioned so many times on here cooling system has to be in top notch condition.

4/94 (first of the 300) with 367,000km. Original engine with a few oil leaks - always has.
The Head was replaced under warranty (22,000km) due to a 'Manufacturing fault'.
Injectors have not been out, not even cleaned. Fuel pump never been removed. Always fed with BP and a regular bottle of 'Fuel Doctor' or similar. Uplift pump has been replaced.
Header tank split early resulting in a coolant alarm being fitted (before the days of Engine Saver). This alarm saved the engine about year later when the original bottom hose let go in a big way - all hoses replaced at that point. Rad gets a flush every 2 years.
On its 3rd clutch, and the only thing really is that stupid idler pulley that need a new bearing every 2 years or so.

Dec 98 Disco - 318k, when neglect of cooling caught up with me. New head, Injectors,H/gasket, water pump and all cooling hoses. EGT & Temp gauge/sender inside Radiator (Auber Inst). 3-wire sender for Alarm????
Still had clean bores and cross hatching. Radiator checked, but didn't require rodding. Got it done anyways as it was out. Clutch at 200K+. Feels like it's slipping when cruising on the flat. Only way to check is to pull it out!!!!!
Gearshift lever worn inside selector box. See seperate posting.
Cheers

My 98 has got 383k. Just did the head gasket for the second time (well the first time I didn't do it, but this time I gave it a go with help from this great site) and I'm in the process of ironing out one or two minor issues (better be minor!). Couldn't get the valves right until I discovered one of the valve train studs wasn't tightening up and now she's burred off.
Apart from the head gasket going, it has been a very reliable vehicle. Hoping it will go another 200k.

325k on mine, did 322 before the engine refresh (injested water). But still went fine, and even better now, always been a bit of a smoker and a thirsty beast but it's driven hard.

266k on my 98 D1.
Already had the engine saver coolant alarm when I got it, but still had the original black coolant expansion tank..
Replaced the expansion tank and a duff lifter pump and the odd idler pulley, but so far so good.

HI, My 98 130 with 300tdi is pushing oil out the oil filler cap on the tappet cover:( at 350ks, breathers are clear, what did you find to be the problem, and what did you do about your injector pump, replace or repair, at what cost?

Seems like mines the baby of the bunch then. 174k is just about to tick over. Replaced expansion tank with custom ally one (inc low water alarm) change oil and put diesel in. That's all I've done. Had her for just over 12 months now. Bit rough on the outside paint wise as its been an outside car all it's life I'd say. Inside is quite tidy for 96 mod.
Just remembered, had to replace the donut about a month ago!

My 98 300TDi has just passed 498,500
I cannot find anything I like as much. It is starting to get a bit tired everywhere except the mechanicals
Think I will do the springs front and rear and maybe get a new windscreen as the current one is the original and is fine until you drive into the sun and then shows up the sand blasted surface.

51,000km/year is an awesome amount of driving.....I take my hat off to you.
I don't enjoy driving that much....my driving is really just a means to a destination that I like. I try to enjoy it more going slower and stopping at every one of those brown and gold signs.

I do 20,000 km annually just on my work commute, then about that again privately.
Starting to sweat a little bit as my mileage in now in the mid 300s, the old ZF is starting to feel exceptionally loose.
