started car this morning and suddenly engine started shaking badly.turned it off and started it again and seems to run fine again.it had been sitting for about a week or so.any ideas?:confused:

It could be your fuel pumps (there are 2 - it could be either) on the way out.
If you have access to diagnostics, see if you have a fuel pressure error.

If it's now running ok, I would suggest your static fuel pressure had dropped. Similar as if you don't prime the system after fitting a new fuel filter. Just check the sealing on the fuel lines and the fuel filter rubber gasket etc.
Also have you ever put a fuel condioner into your tank ? Algae growth is a big problem with modern diesel fuels, the small filter on the tank fuel pump can become blocked, so initial fuel pressure is low until the system has primed it's self. On Td5's this screen when blocked can cause pump overheating and failure, rough running etc silmilar to what Fraser was saying above. So it might be worth doing a "shock treatment" ! I have always used a fuel condioner until Caltex Vortex Diesel was available, when in remote areas always use the truck diesel pump as due to the high usage the chance of algae growth is limited. I have no connection with the above products, I just found them good.

Had the same thing a while ago, all the fuel pipes around the filter and cooler were loose, this allowed the fuel to run back if it was left for a few days.
some clips i could tighten, some replaced and some pipes were trimmed and refitted. cars been parked up for six weeks now and starts first go.
there is a fuel pipe running from the big mongy valve on the inner wing below the filter to the back of the high pressure pump, this was tricky to get to but was the loosest.
start at the fuel filter and check all the pipes, if you can rotate them then they can draw air in. if you find one loose then do the lot. not a big job.
