So

The park has been open a couple of weeks now
It was a pretty poor wet season and I had fears that recruitment up the Normanby Kennedy and Laura rivers would be poor
Also the late open meant we had already had a cold snap that generally shuts the barra down a little

Not no matter! Plenty of nice barra about - heaps of rats which is good to see

Water levels are definitely low for June but seems fish are pretty thick and feeding for the moment

Have spent the past 3 weekends in different locations and found fish easily enough - some pics attached - all fish released (imo freshwater barra taste terrible - I also think saltwater barra are the most over rated eating fish in the North!) my best thus far for 2012 is a very chunky 83cm that smashed a richos sardine - no camera at the time so youll just have to believe me!

If you are in the area and want a few tips track me down

Beauty mate. Some nice looking barra.

How was the wet on the west coast, up to Mapoon? Did they get much rain.

We are heading up that way in september.

Finger crossed the barra are thick like you said.

Yeh i got some tides times for september and it looks like the 10-21 with the few days around the new moon to be good.

Do you get over to the west much yourself?

Contrary to "normal" the west coast like the gulf often fishes better on the smaller tides around the neaps with the run in the better tide to work

Having said that those dates you give will be good - particularly the week after the new on the 16th with those afternoon high tides

mapoon is a big area - are you taking boats? working up the coast at all? pennefather?

15-19 is predicted to be the best tides.

North of mapoon in fact, at this stage.

Two boats on the trip. Not working up the coast, just going to focus on one area.

Pennefather was the initial plan, heading further north now.
