Well over the last couple of weeks I have been looking for a replacement vehicle for my td5 130. Well I can say easier said then done. I have been looking at Jeep Wranglers, I do like them but have concerns. The diesel engines don't seem to be that reliable plagued with problems, the new V6 engine looks really good but I have my concerns that when towing or when the vehicle is loaded and modified with lift and tyre's and racks it will chew a lot of fuel. From standard the petrol is good on fuel though.
I just wish the defender was quieter and had less leaks. The defender is a great car for the bush but I am finding my lifted 130 a pain in the bum for a daily driver in a city
Is the puma quieter on the road then a td5 defender?

Sounds like you need a Defender :) , just spend what you would on a Jeep to make it follow the Defender on seats, sound deadening and a new clutch counterweight spring thingo, also a tube of sikaflex

Having been in your 130,I can only wish to have a Defender that was that quiet:eek:
I think if you want a hop in and drive every day vehicle, then the Jeep will be very similar to a Land Rover, they are both very idiosyncratic.
Hop in drive and forget, you can't go past the Japanese, but finding one that will give you as much pleasure as driving a Defender is another thing.

Yeah cheers Wayne, I did test a new Wrangler and it was a lot quieter than my defender. But as you aluded to driving a defender is better.
The other car makes have other issues I don't want to deal with but are better in areas that I don't like about the defender.
I think it may be a case of harden up princess lol

Geez, you guys crack me up sometimes. I'm 45 and have never owned a decent car that didn't need a rebuild and didn't give me something to worry about, and my God would I love to have a 130 of some sort with a super-duper modern engine, (assuming I could afford to fix it, as money has always been a worry and I just can't imagine having the luxury of being able to own something like a TD5).
Maybe you should park it for a few months, buy, er, a Series II or a Toyota, and see just how much you appreciate your 130 when you get back into it! I mean, a 130, what else out there can compare to that???

Apparently there is a new cruiser ute dual cab coming out soon-ish, the motor in that is enough to make me have a look haha, but i've heard of a lot of rollovers due to the narrower back axle and higher top speed with the tdv8, a defender would be nicer to drive but if you want grunt and dependability, i hate to say it but the cruiser ticks a lot of boxes, mind you if defender had a better engine and some ergonomics to match this decade it would win hands down any day, they are all a compromise.

you obviously havent been around my local toyota dealers yard lately
the last few weekends we have had a couple parked up out the front with flags and just about anything else that grabs your attention with the words "LEMONS" featuring quite distinctively..
brought a tear to my eye....

Yeah - I saw him traveling north around Glass House on Friday, the 'lemon' on a car trailer with flags, signs and lemons and all else all over it. I did however think it funny that it looks like he's gone and shelled out on a new one to tow it around.
End of the day there's a lot of happy Tojo drivers, just like there's a lot of happy LR drivers BUT I know if something had driven me to that extent I would be changing brands for sure.

If you're looking for a daily driver with occasional off-road capacity, then have you looked at the Pajero diesels ?
If you're very much 'over' having to work on cars, these may be good compromise. - They're not as big and bulky as ToyoSans but have heaps of useful interior space. - double that of a current RR and much more than a Disco. (Comments from a long time-Disco II owner...)
At my vintage, I can appreciate 'boring' and 'lack of personality' in a car...
Plus you've got the option of fuel economy with 2WD for commuting. :D

For what it's worth, one of the blokes in my 4wd club has a son who had a new Jeep Wrangler (2010 I think). He has had nothing but problems and has just traded it on a new Defender. I own a Jeep as well, just not a Wrangler, so I'm not biased against them. It's hard to get it all in the one package. The Wrangler is so much better on the tarmac than the Defender in my opinion (ducks for cover :)) but reliability issues are a pain.

I have recently bought a 2l turbo diesel small coupe as a second car. Still have my '84 V8 90 and love it, but it is great to get in a car that you KNOW will start every time, uses 5.5l/100km, you can park in multistory car parks etc. Perhaps a 'sensible' 2nd car is a better option instead of a jack-of-all-trades, master of none compromise.
I certainly appreciate my 90 a lot more when I drive it on weekends now i know I am not depending on it.
The obvious downside is 2 lots of rego and insurance but for me it is worth the extra cost.
