View Full Version : New D4 in November

Hi all,

New to the forums and about to purchase a new D4 HSE but have seen reports online that the current model available in Europe and the US will be released here in November. (8 speed auto).

My question is, should I hold out and get the 8 speed box with slightly more HP or stick with what is currently tried and tested in Oz?

The attraction of holding out is getting a 2013 compliance plated car with all the new bells and whistles but the major downer is having to wait.

Anyone heard any bad reports on the 8 speed box?

G'day Ben

I glanced at the two articles that you linked but I couldn't see anything that specifically referred to the vehicles imported to Australia. My understanding is that the 8 speed box is to enable the vehicle to meet tougher emission standards in the US and Europe. Those same standards don't apply here in Australia (yet) and hence our models have the 6 speed box.

When I ordered my Disco 4 (due next month) I asked about the 8 speed box and was told that Land Rover have no plans to bring this transmission into Australia. Maybe you should contact your dealer and ask the question?

I have experience with the six speed box in my Disco 3 and am perfectly happy with the idea of having the beefed up 6 speed in the D4.

Cheers

Russ

Sorry, should have linked that article too.

2012 Land Rover Discovery 4 On Sale In Australia From November | Reviews | Prices | Australian specifications (http://www.themotorreport.com.au/52079/2012-land-rover-discovery-4-update-on-sale-in-australia-from-november)

I'm not a fan of paddle shifts and have a nasty habit of driving with my hand on the gear shift (auto or manual) so maybe the current D4 is the go.

I received a quote on the vehicle I specked up yesterday, I will email back and ask about the new model. My guess they will want a sale now not in the new year so will not confirm what I have read (and now linked).

There are two emissions changes.

1. DPF filter. This lets the disco engine meet Euro 5. I know NZ only requires Euro 4 at present but when Euro 4 vehicles (no DPF) decline in production I'd expect Euro 5 to be the only option.
2. 8 speed box and accompaning CO2 reduction. A CO2 reduction means an increase in fuel economy. Put simply the 8 speed box is more efficient (correct gear more often, less T/C slip).

The DPF filter, take it or leave it. It shouldn't be long before tuners can map out the regeneration to enable you to remove DPF's if they give trouble.
The 8 speed box. I can't think of any reason not to have it.

It shouldn't be long before tuners can map out the regeneration to enable you to remove DPF's if they give trouble. The D4 has a configuration parameter DPF fitted/not fitted. Perhaps its like the steering lock fitted/not fitted parameter whereby when set to not fitted the lock isn't activated.

Hey Ben,
I'm with you, love resting the hand on the stick in the D4 especially in sports mode through the hills (pardon the pun :o).
The D4 TD3.0 has grouse fuel economy especially on long trips with the 6-speed gearbox - In the low 8's/LPH I get frequently. A little higher around town 10-11's depending on how you drive.
I cant see the value of strolling around in 8th gear, especially around town as you simply wouldn't get there very often. Even on the freeway, you want to know when you plant the right foot, you go places - ASAP, not in 30 seconds time while the gearbox/turbo lag sorts itself out.
Shane.

With the extra 2 gears the vogues are into the 6's for fuel consumption on the highway. Who doesn't want that?

Around town the 8 speeds will be in the right gear with the torque converter locked more of the time. This is where you get the fuel savings over having 6 gears and slipping the torque converter to bridge the gaps.

Finally managed to pin down my local LC dealer. They report with the discontinued 2.7lt and the introduction of the new entry level 3lt, available to order from October (with less torque than the SDV6) they will ship with the 8 speed boxes. However, the 8 speed boxes on the SE and HSE will not hit our shores until 2014.

Looks like it’s time to finalise that order and part with some $$.

That might explain why I was told the difference between the base models and the SE will be considerably less i.e. ~4k and not the 12-13k it has been - making for a more expensive entry level model.

2014 is a long time to wait for 8 speed in the mid and premium models.

Appreciate any info on pricing that people are getting! Via private message of you prefer.

Gday Mal,

I have a 2012 D4 SDV6 HSE in Ipenema Sand with Active rear diff, tire pressure monitor, keyless entry, side body moldings, ebony interior with woodgrain inserts on order due in mid July. Im in WA and I settled on $104K drive away which was about $10K less than the two Perth dealers.

Cheers.

I do and placed my order yesterday afternoon. Just waiting on the final paperwork and will post up some more information. Pitty about the 4 month wait but it will be well worth it.

Right about now, I'm feeling pretty good about ordering my D4 2.7 back in Feb. It is pre-dominantly for the Mrs. I argued with myself about not upgrading to the 3.0, but some good feedback from this forum got me over the line. In the end I added some some pec for the extra bucks and still came out cheaper than an SD. I added 7seat leather, electric pack, technology pack, Hi-ICE, 20" 10 spoke, keyless entry and a couple of little accessories thrown in for $83k. Admittedly, its not your bush bash spec but then again, it will spend more time on the road than off it. Oh, and I bought it with my wife on Feb 14 (aka Valentines Day). She was just as excited as me. Now I have the line, 'Dont ever say I never get you anything' in my aresnal when the opportunity presents itself :D. Car arrived early June, but I'm not able to pick it up till end July due to a self inflicted circumstance. I have that tingly feeling in my agots and the end of July cant come soon enough.

Cheers Steve

Well, the deal has been done and the deposit has been place. Now hurry up and wait. Expected delivery is October but I know the wait will be worth it.

Spec. of the build

2012 Build MY13 Discovery 4 HSE
Ebony Premium Leather
Orkney Grey
Vision Assist (auto high beam, surround camera, xenon adaptive headlights)
Roof Rails, full length with cross bars
Privacy Glass
Tyre Pressure Monitor
Keyless Entry
Cooler Box
Electric Steering Wheel Adjust
Premium Carpet Mats (will get a set of rubber ones for weekends)
Premium Ice Sound System
Active Rear Diff
Set me back 120k drive away, 4.8k cheaper than the lowest of 3 other quotes I got. This wait is going to kill me.

If the price difference is only 3-4k then why would you buy the new much lower spec 3.0? You would just hunt around and get a deal on the SE which could end up being around the same or even less than a new base model.

Is a 8 speed gearbox worth missing out on SE specifications and a more powerful engine?

Seriously I bet they are fibbing on the price difference being so little, they are just saying this to get everyone to rush around and buy the run out 2.7's at what people are being told will be much cheaper then the new model when it arrives.

Plus the the other thing is if the new entry level D4 is around 90k plus drive away then they have priced themselves out of the lower price group altogether which is would then be handed to vehicles like the Prado and Pajero.

When there is a massive sale like is happneing right now it is not unusual for forward planned purchases by consumers to be brought forward by upto 3 months. Then the sale time is followed by a very slow sales period of several months. Once the June sales finish then this will give LR several months to introduce the new base model D4 without risk of being lumbered with dozens of 2.7's that they can't sell because of similar prices to the new 3.0. LR have been very good at playing their cards close to their chests re the new model and hats off to them for keeping it quite.

The one unknown factor is the value of our dollar in 3 months time but I bet like most other importers of high value products LR would be ordering their new models with dollar fluctuation insurance so they aren't caught out.

I might be proven to be completely wrong and time will tell, but I'd guess the new 3.0 8 speed base model wiill only be several thousand dollars more then the present 2.7 at most, not around 10k more as is now predicted.

cheers,
Terry

yep, I agree. Then again, a detuned 3.0l with 8 speed has to have a premium on the current 2.7l. Could also be that they are not trying to compete with pajeros and prados, but with the luxury 4wds. Time will tell.

Congrats to bend4 and olid4. The wannabe owners club is getting more lonely.

Detuned to what and why?

In the UK they have a lower power 3.0 in the commercial disco. Suspect the 2.7 doesn't meet euro 5.

Not sure if you got my reply - I'm having a bit of trouble with this:confused: D4 was a SE in Fuji White.
I got it at Hunter Prestige Newcastle. I also had the exact D4 lined up at Mooroochydore but Newcastle was closer.

The wannabe owners club is getting more lonely.

There are some members like me lurking in the shadows. I want a Fuji white base model with active rear diff, reversing camera and whatever sound system that can run my ipod and iphone properly. I'm glad the base model will be the 3ltr (detuned is not an issue for me) with the 8 peed box but it seems the price is rising faster than I'm saving!

I'm hoping to pounce next June.

Heated front w/screen, heated wipers, heated seats x 4, heated s/wheel.

Our market is classed as a hot climate so no fuel burning heater (webasto) for our market.

Bruce Lynton on the Gold Coast.

I can see that you're based in Sydney, give Chris Stepien a call at Trivett Parramatta 9841 4051 he was pretty helpful when I was doing the initial negotiations for the car and was just short of the price I was after (plus I'd have to drive the car up from Sydney). Trivett at Alexandria were absolutely useless and Alto at Artarmon couldn't get to the price I was after.

If you're unable to source a car that's already in the country with your spec, I'd go for an MY13 (build) I think they're shipping from October.

Feel free to PM me if you have want any more info.

Spoke with the dealer I have ordered my MY13 with today for an update. They inturn spoke with LRA and have informed me that the MY13 D4 details will be released in the next few weeks and advise that the delivery of my car as ordered is now pushed out to mid first quarter 2013, but be prepared for end of March delivery.

Was initially told November and was having a hard enough time holding out 'til then. I am going to need to find something to keep me pacified until next year now.

One positive is it looks like it will be a 2013 built and complianced car opposed to the 2012 built and complianced MY13.

Hi Scott,

Was the first question I asked lol.... They have no details at all on the MY13 so they have no idea at this stage, was assured I would be first to know once the information is forthcoming from LRA. Research suggests it will be MY14-15 before we see the 8speed, if at all.

No, I understand there will be a base model (replacement for the 2.7) but I think its arrival is delayed till jan/feb 2013. I was told it would be a 'detuned' 3.0 with the same basic features as the 2.7 tdv6. But who knows. Looking forward to an official announcement from LRA.

I'd love to know what sort of $ a MY13 8 Speed "detune" 3l is going to come out at. I am losing a lot of sleep over taking the plunge on a runout SE. If the MY13 base models are cheap, it would give me an incentive to delay the decision and keep saving up.
