Looking at the possiblity of getting a 110 or 130 D/C.
Sat in a 110 the other day at the showroom, and didnt find the elbow room all that comfortable.
Didnt drive it....no salesman came near me, maybe the new haircut scared them off?
How do you guys find the lack of elbow room?

It's something you get used to I guess. I drive with the window down and I have raised my center cuddy box so I use that for an arm rest instead.

It is a bit of an acquired taste but I have found it really good. I am a bit of a short A and as a result, I find the window elbow position really comfortable as it is not too far away. I always drive with the windows up.

E box has raised the height of the console and every now and then I bump my elbow and the little lever can be a bit more difficult to engage but it is not as if most people are changing in and out of 4WD all day so it is not a hassle.

Mulgo seat rail extensions are a must IMO. Cheers

I'm only 5'11" and the elbow room doesn't bother me - I also tend to drive with the window down and elbow resting on the sill. I had more trouble with my leg against the hard plastic door handle so I took them off and cut up a leather belt and made straps/loops instead - no more problem!!

I used to think the elbow room was ok with the window up then I fitted an ex-box and it got better then with seat rail extensions its now fantastic.

With the window down it was never a problem.

In terms of salesmen coming near you just test the horn a few times, that should get their attention.

i was a bit concerned myself but after doing the cape york telegraph track a total of 10000Ks in 5 weeks i have either gotten used to it or it looks worse than it is. im 6 foot tall and accually find the seating position more comfortable than the company holden ute.

Surgery will sort that for you no prob. While your there ask for the job lot.

Ear drums - they don't call em deafenders for nothing,
Left knee mods where the hand brake sits,
Right knee where the window winder rests,
Right elbow, as there is no elbow room,
Rear right butt cheek padding to make up for the empty wallet, not for the car, the accessories!
Shorten both legs as the seat does not go back far enough,
The brain mods, only special people buy Land Rovers.

While you are in have all the belt loops removed from your trousers

Gee did I miss any important ones....

It seems like a very personal thing.

I'm 180cm (not sure what this is in furlongs), and can happily drive the 110 for hours at a stretch. I drove from Narangba to Coverty and back on Sunday, with no problems at all.

As Marty110 said, I have more trouble (though not much) with the hard plastic door handle...

The most difficult thing in a defender for a big block like me is to use the window winder.

on a lesser annoyance, I find it difficult sometimes to use the clutch when wearing boots (maybe because I wear size 13:(), I guess this is mainly due to the lack of seat movement, as said before an extension rail will cure this on the expense of the space left for any occupant of the second row seat.

yeah i have longer rails on the seats too and it is an instant child safety lock for rear seat passengers as the seat now covers the door release handles so once in the back no-one can get out unless let out!! n.b my seats are a bit bigger too so might make a difference

A lot has been said of elbow room and the intrusion of the hand brake. I am 185cm and 100 and some undisclosed kgs. I really have never noticed lack of elbow/shoulder room or leg room. I suppose you do just get used to it.

The only thing that actually bugs me is the window winder which digs into my knee when the knob end is down, which is when the window is fully open; which it never is; because the knob end digs into my knee.

I'm 5'11" and I don't have any problems at all now. The first week or so was a bit of a pain, but then I was fighting more with the 6 speed box.
Now,, I wouldn't want to drive anything else :D

All you guys with the window winder problem - its so simple to fix you will be kicking yourself. Remove the clip holding the handle on with a flat head screwdriver/pliers, rotate the handle through 180 degrees, put it back on and replace the clip. jobs a goodun.

Thanks, but then when the window is up the knob is down and will dig into my knee. Should probably try a 90 degree move but its only about a 50mm move to clear it, barely lifts the window really.

Saw these on a recent thread, and thought they looked good. Pretty cheap at about $10 each: MUDSTUFF.CO.UK, Defender Flexible Grab Handle (http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/Defender%20Flexible%20Grab%20Handle.shtml)

I've only had my 110 for 4 days now (loving it) and have already worked out a solution to your issue - buy a MY12 110 - it has ELECTRIC WINDOWS with switches on the dash!!! Perfect. :D

When I find a cable to plug the camera into the computer I will post some pics.

i moved both my seats 50mm inboard, and put the disco park brake next to the seat. have to make a narrower centre console but it is a nice mod.

Cheers for the opinions, the 110 I sat in certainly wasn't uncomfortable, in fact it was lot more comfortable than I thought it would be. Just the elbow room annoyed me. And leg room in the back for an adult.

Justinc, I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the 50mm mod you made. That could be something to look at.

Zwitter, I'm checking out the health fund to see if your ideas can be done.

Looks like Id better tee up a test drive and see how it feels on the road.

Cheers

Good Idea JC

wish I'd thought of that before I ordered my exbox.

Heres a pic of the Iveco Massif (Spain), which is essentially a modern Series3 (look at the door tops) They have a narrow console and moved the seats together.
They even have room for Door Pockets AND proper arm rests.

Yes, but I can seat three across my Defender. :p

In the days before seat belts, we used to regularly seat four across the seats of a Series II.

BTW, I have no problems with elbow room or the handbrake position in my Defender.

The Td5 defender came with electric front windows......

If the position of the window winder is annoying you......it can easily
be changed to to any angle that suits you....

If you want to go off road.....buy a defender and "enjoy" it's niggles.....
If you want comforts and luxuries that are found in high spec cars.....then a late model disco
or range rover would be better.......

But the fenders will always be more fun.......
I guess you gotta have a good sense of humor to buy a fender......

Just drove 3,500 Km from VIC to WA in 4 days in a 2009 Defender 110. For the first hour or so the right shoulder & elbow room seemed constrained, but soon got used to it, driving position was quite comfortable except for the foot on the accelerator feeling it was bent too far up. Maybe that's just my longish legs, seat extension rails will probably sort that.
