Remote oil filters

Restoring a 47 Buick Super and want to change the by-pass filter system to full flow.
Has anyone had experience with remote oil filter setups. I have found a HAMBERGER remote filter head that should work but does anyone have any ideas?

I have a Willys jeep which I converted to full flow and play with Continental side valves in forklifts which may or may not be full flow.
Full flow increases bearing life under high load applications.
I leave the by pass system as standard as it works a treat for that fine crud in the oil and helps oil cooling.
On old cast iron blocks it is usually possible to tap a gas thread from the out side of the block to the main oil galley to the bearings.
Cheap and simple alloy castings are availible from performance shops that allow fire wall fit up of spin on filters......Z9 through to Z145 range filters.
Volkswagon performance shops are good as it is a common improvement on early beetle motors etc.
The hard part is getting the full flow from the oil pump.
If it is exturnally bolted to the out side of the block , you can remove the pump, drill and tap a hole in to take a gas thread so a pipe/ hose fitting can be added.
The out put of the pump to the blockmust be blocked off again by tapping a thread and scewing in a piece of steel to block the passage.
Pumps inside the sump are harder , but it is a similer story, but the pump oulet passage must be blocked off and the oil routed though the filter.
I usually use 1/2 inch ID oil resistant transmission oil cooler hoses and normal hose clamps ect and some times JIC hydraulic fittings on the block etc.

Thanks for your help. Do I understand that you run the bypass as well as the full flow filter.
I shall tap my oil gallery and do a similar thing to you. jut wanted to get as much info as I could before commiting to drilling holes in my beloved block!
Thinking of putting a modern filter element in the old style cannister by pass so the system looks original.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Is the Buick oil pump inside the sump, or bolted to the block externally ?

I just bought an adapter plate to change from a cannister style filter to a modern spin on filter for a mid 60's chev small block. You may be able to find a similar adapter for your Buick.

Go to a wrecking yard or keep an eye out at swap meets for the remote oil filter housing used on Chrysler Slant 6 engines.

Long time since I had dealings with a Buick 8. Can't remember what the lube plumbing is like. I do remember that the crankshaft from a 320 weighs 250 lbs.

Take note the oil pump has had its outlet hole threaded and pluged off with a bolt, so the the oil must travel though the filter via a new outlet fitting in the side of the oil pump.
The oil return back to the block is with a extra hole drilled and tapped into the block at the protusion that supports the oil pump.

Here are photos of a late 1930's Buick 248 converted to full flow filtration. The doer said he tapped into the channel from the oil pump to the gallery but can't remember how he blocked off the internal feed to the gallery. He said it cant have been difficult. He used the remote filter head from a Valiant Slant 6 and returned the outlet to the main gallery.
