that's right - it would be interesting to know the reasoning for what does seem, superficially at least, a bit ridiculous...

many people with enough land space would have paid for the transport to their place

The politicians will blame the Americans contractual requirements to dispose of American technology so no third party gets it so they can't give them to third parties for display purposes and couldn't sell them to another country

Only option they had was to junk them

Another case of bad decision making by our politicians was to buy the American strike fighter as replacement for Hornets and F111, going to be overly expensive and under performing and delayed for years.

We should stop buying junk for the boys who want toys

I understand that was their answer - and a historical one given what happened after WW2...

But, 'we' have sold the ex-US Trackers to private hands, and the Skyhawks went to NZ - not exactly on good terms with the US??

I suspect that agreement wasn't the reason. It's obsolete equipment with little to no value on the (friendly) military market.

Anyway, just as well one has been saved.

Matt.

open to the public then?

I don't know ... but I expect so

ATM there are 2 older jets refurbished for static display (Canberra & Meteor) out the front of the base guardroom that anyone can go and look around - if they are going to add the F111 to these they have to rearrange them to find a bit of room :o

Just a shame to see an historic aircraft meet such a ordinary ending.:(
I remember the days when there was 2 Neptunes slowly rotting away at the dump at RAAF base Garbutt plus numerous Huey bits and pieces. One of them now stands at the entrance to the base.

They shouldn't have driven it past Temora, it should have gone into the excellent Warbirds Museum they have there.

Cheers, Mick.

spent many years based at AMB with the tripple ones taking off not far from the transmitter building I worked in. also used to service the EVD bombing range where the pigs would come screaming in at low altidute then pull up to do toss bombing. Great to see.

Unfortunately the F111 is a strategic weapon system, and came with little black boxes for weapons we supposedly dont have. Hence the yanks wont let us sell them on and they had to be buried.

Bit like in the 20s or 30s when a lot of capital ships including HMAS Australia were scuttled due to the Washington Naval treaty.

I'm sure the Indos sleep more soundly now

In fact only some of the models we purchased were so equipped, not all.

The governments argument for the non-nuke ones revoves around asbestos and potetnial liability....

All bull**** of course because they were at one stage trying to sell them (for ridiculous sums of money) for static display.

Here's the background...
