Help a novice - 1993 V8i strange sound - Video included...

Hi there,

I've had this 1993 V8i for a couple years now, i'm pretty sure this sound has always been there although can't be certain. I'm really noticing it a lot more in the last few days though ... possibly it's getting worse? I don't know. I'm not great mechanically but can generally follow instructions :)

Can anyone check out the video below and let me know what you think it is? I think i found the area it's coming from as it was certainly louder underneath just near the oil filter.

It sounds like there's something rattling around somewhere or something hitting somewhere.

Thanks for any suggestions on how to fix it too.

Well the first thing I would do is remove the fan cowling, fan and belts and check that an idler pulley bearing or water pump bearing is not stuffed by spinning them without the belts on. Start the car up with no belts to see if it still makes the noise.
Another possibility is that the engine mounts are dead and the motor has dropped and the fan is rubbing on the bottom of the cowling. There should be witness marks and be quite obvious if you try spinning the fan before removing anything.

Phillips probably on the money, but I had a similar noise once turned out to be exhaust to downpipe gasket blowing, I first thought is was a mechancal knock.....but then it got worse as the gasket burnt away:eek:

While you have the belts off check that there are no lumps or bumps on the V section, that will cause a knock. Is it an Auto box, if so could be loose torque convertor bolt or damaged flex plate, also with engine stopped check if the outer ring on the dampner/front pulley is loose. A long shot but I once traced a noise like this to a starter motor that was loose and touching the flywheel, good luck and let us know when you find the problem, Regards Frank.

Well to be honest, most of what you guys said went over my head! I've never replaced a belt so don't know how to get them off. Going to use the net to learn and try to do everything you guys suggested tomorrow. Hopefully i'll be able to isolate where it's coming from, take some photos of where that is and someone can tell me what exactly the photo is of :)

I successfully changed the oil and oil filter today for the first time. (that gives you a bit of an idea of how much of a novice i am with all of this!)

Mate, you need to get a Workshop Manual ($60 Pitstop Bookshop, Perth WA) either genuine Land Rover or the Rave Disc off this Forum, see"Dave's interesting things", should be at top of main page, don't waste money on a Haynes Maual, rubbish. If you can't learn to do a lot of the basic work/maintenance then you better have deep pockets, maybe join a local LR club and see if someone who lives in your area can assist or better show you how, Regards Frank.

If this helps narrow down what it could be, i just had a good 40 min drive so the engine was good and hot. The sound was virtually non existent when I got out so seems to be something isolated to cold engine...

Ok so an update, i think i've found it...fixed it (possibly)

I have been trying to narrow down where it's coming from, really just by listening to different parts of the engine, definitely was close to alternator so took that pulley off and started but still there...a little more listening and i was sure it was coming from the area connected to that which i believe is the power steering pulley.

I thought rather than trying to take the pulley off that i'd just spray some WD40 behind it as that's sort of where it sounded as though it was coming from .... restarted the engine and presto...no sound! SO ... i know WD40 is probably a bandaid solution as i'd imagine the reason it worked is a bearing has gone or something is rubbing that shouldn't be.

Any thoughts? (or just put some more WD40 on there if it comes back?)

Thanks for everyones help so far (btw, i've downloaded the RAVE manual ... that should keep me nice and busy! door handle/lock keeps playing up so now i know how to take the door apart.)

Check that the three nuts on the front of the pulley are done up.

The happy news is that it's not going to be anything expensive! :cool:
