17" Muddies

What 17" muddies have people put on their D3/RRS.

I have got a set of BMW wheels and am investigating what to put on them. I have BFG MT KM2s on my 101 and am surprised how road friendly they are. I have priced some in 17" but they come in about $370 and I would have to get a spare to match. Maxxis Bighorn muddies are $100 cheaper and I can get them with the same rolling diameter as the standard D3 18" Wranglers so would not need to also change the spare.

So what muddies have people used on their D3s in 17". What size and any clearance issues? Likewise if used as their everyday tyre what are the pros and cons.

If I decide to stay with 18" for every day use I will go General Grabber ATs amd as the 17" would then be for occasional use so would prefer to go as cheap as possible while retaining load and speed requirements etc

I have GG on 18 and Mick T MTZ 17 on BMW rims like you. Find a little rubbing only in reverse on the RHS Front only and only if I neglect to set my LLAMS a little higher. The extra hight of the 265-70-17 MTZ makes my speedo perfect as a bonus. I have not used my winch to pull myself out of anywhere when I have had these on. I cannot say the same for the GG but I do try hard.

A recent trip did manage to make a few minor chips out of muddies. I assume it was a very deep and very rocky river crossing when I was giving my car a fair bit of curry to try to move forwards.

Are you considering 245/70-17, being only slightly larger diameter than the OEM 18" D3 tyres you mentioned? The BFG KM2 is available in this size, not that I have any experience with them.

I ran MT MTZ's in 265 x 70 x 17 on my D3 with no problem.

They are a bit loud however.

My son has 255 x 85 x 16 KM2's on his D2a & they are quieter than the MTZ's with good road grip.

I am running MT ATZ 4 rib currently & although they are great both on & off road they are a little noisy.

In hindsight I wish I had bought the KM2's.

The only problem with the bigger tyres is if you have an air failure dropping you down to the bumpstops which I have seen on a D3 with OEM size tyres.

This could then leave you with the tyres resting on the inner guard liners.

Imported from the US - Tirerack. I've had no clearence issues on Landrover 17" rims in all my offroading. I purchased 6 tyres as a second set and normally only used when preparing for a trip. Sometimes thet stay on for a few months if numerous trips are planned. No issues on the blacktop asside from a slight increase in road noise - very supprised about how quiet they are for a mud tyre. Excellent tyre off road. Victorian High Country, mud, sand (Vic deserts and far west NSW).
This tyre is taller than the standard 18" - so spare is required. I have 2 spares as this size isn't readily available in Australia.

Are you considering 245/70-17, being only slightly larger diameter than the OEM 18" D3 tyres you mentioned? The BFG KM2 is available in this size, not that I have any experience with them.

In the Maxxis there is a 255/65 R 17 size which is almost spot on the same as the original D3 tyres (a tad bigger than the standard RRS size)

The BFGs (which I do like but they have a price premium) are bigger so a further 17" wheel and tyre will be needed.

In hindsight I wish I had bought the KM2's.

The only problem with the bigger tyres is if you have an air failure dropping you down to the bumpstops which I have seen on a D3 with OEM size tyres.

As I have indicted above I also like the BFGs but also have a concern if the system does drop to the bumpstops - might need a GOE inflation system to fix if this happens

The slightly smaller 245/70R17 is in Aust here but is still a bit taller than standard so may have issues if on the bump stops.
