nikon teleconverter

ive got a nikon d90 with a 70-300 lens
i was told that by fitting a teleconverter i can increase my range they said a nikon tc-20e mark 3 is the go need help here thanks
my apologies im very new to this photo scene

Yes a 2x teleconvertor will make your 70-300 a 140-600. But will also slow your f-stop from f5.6 to f11. You will also loose some clarity.
You can a also get a 1.4x convertor. Both work well but slow your lenses down

Gary is right,

if your new to photography the f stop is how much light the lense can let in so at f11 once you get into afternoon / shade / low light the speed will be half so not saying don't, but be aware that you may only be able to use it in good light.

Having said that I fully intend to get one knowing that it will be used in specific situations

The 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 is a good lens but I'm almost certain it won't take a teleconverter (Chucaro can jump in here and correct me if I'm wrong).

The D90 will really struggle to focus with the f-stop range which the 2xTC would reduce this lens to. The AF system is really designed to work with f/5.6 or larger (smaller numbers).

Then I've got the Sigma APO HSM 70-200 with a 2x tele-converter to give the focusing speed to keep up with the speed of the bike & the 3d tracking. It is also very sharp, even with the tele-converter.

You cannot use a teleconverter with the 70-300VR it will damage the lens!!!
If you like to use a teleconverter try to use it on a primer lens like the excellent Nikon 300 f/4.
Make sure that it is a Nikon, the Kenko is terrible and do not do justice in this lens.
In a lens with an aperture of f/5.6 or more I would not use a teleconverter bigger that the 1.4.
The new Nikon x2 is very good and give excellent results in the 600 f/4 and reasonable good on the 200-400.

I have a sigma 70-200 f/2.8 with the matched sigma 2xTC. This is then a 400mm f5.6 which still allows AF, which is designed to work at 5.6 or better.

One thing I've realised with the 400mm effective is that shutter speed/stability is king. With a 600mm f11 you will have a real problem.

I would stand closer, or crop more.
