Hi all,

I’ve had an ongoing intermittent power loss problem in my Rangie for a while now. See the previous link if you’re interested. http://www.aulro.com/afvb/p38a-range-rover/140318-new-engine-old-problems.html

So, I’m now slowly replacing sensors 1 by 1 to see if anything changes… Next in line is the crank angle sensor. I’ve purchased one from ebay recently and having no experience with these before, I had no idea where to look. I swear this thing reminds me of a certain female location – it’s important for proper operation, it’s bloody hard to find and no one could give me a straight answer of where to look!

I now realise why it was so hard for me to find – my Rangies one is different from anything described by mates or online images. Check out the photos i've attached.

So, it looks to me like it’s missing the cover and the lead is wrong? Now I want to know is this just how it is on a 97 model or has someone done a dodgy? Do I need the cover? Is it worth me trying to replace the current one with the one I have from ebay (see attached pic).

I'll be replacing this in the dark and the combination of the current oil leak i have means i'd rather ask here first before i bother.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Dave

There is no cover over the CPS.

It is located passenger side, you'll meed to get under the car with a flashlight. It's placed near the ring gear for the starter motor and is a bit of a fiddle. It connects up near the exhaust manifold at the back of the block.

I've also had loads of power loss issues and it was a decayed connector on the cam sensor, a bad Maf after replacing the CPS (the car died when hot) and a new fuel pump. The replacement pump has just been diagnosed as faulty delivering only 20psi - might be worth rechecking yours.

you have the correct sensor fitted, the sensor with no fly lead was fitted to some of last gems engines (up to 1999). the sensor with the fly lead is the wrong one.

The drawing shows a similar setup to my D2 and also what must be in some P38's as it's the same as in the 4.6 I fitted. The difference is one is as per the pic, sensor fitted onto studs with nuts and cover bolts on. The other is the opposite fixings. When putting 4.6 to D2 you need to swap plates to keep your original sensor.

Thanks to all for your input. I'll leave the crank sensor alone then. Next on the list is the coil pack...

Same as Vern. Mine had prob's with breaking down at mid rev's and CAS was the culprit. Its an easy one, just do it.

It's especially easy if the coil packs are anything like D2's. I'll replace everyones CAS if one of you will do my coils.
