Been at it over the last three days stripping the paint off the Ambo, got it nicely flattened for a prime, thinking of taking the body off so I can strip the chassis, repaint it and waxoyl the hell out of it.
The good news is that as it will be classed as a mobile home it won't have any duty on it when it gets registered ...result go w.a. Finally some sense. 4807648078480794808048081
Been a hardcore three days but finally making headway

The esbacher (or whatever) heater is coming out to make way for a triple battery set up.
Although in photo 1 the wee beasties paint looks good it is typical British army brushed on badness.
It only has a couple of coats which leads me to believe (plus the 23000 km's) that it was a reserve vehicle territorial army maybe, in saying that it would be an expensive bit of kit to give to weekend warriors.
My house mate also has a 101 Ambo (go figure) that did 40k km's before being cast and was serving with 4 field ambulance prior to its retirement, it worked for a living you can tell by the body work.

Fair comment but the stretchers weigh 200 kilo plus the mechanism I reckon I will shed 1/2 once I am done, if I keep it a v8 it will never realise any kind of economy as it's a house brick, but in the same breathe this will help some.

Well ordered my brand new build v8 3.9 injected turn key engine pre-dyno'd from Acr in the uk.
Roland the boss is going to take photo's as he builds it up.
I get a high pressure fuel pump, all the ancillaries except those particular to the 101 extractors and a clutch thrown in.
Very exciting investment, watch this space

Made my new mig welder trolley up today utilising a couple of bits from the 101 interior, the box under the attendants seat became a storage box and the gas regulator hangers for the oxygen became hooks on the side always nice to reuse stuff, probably should have used bolts opposed to rivets, we will see how it goes. 49916499174991849919

Warrick its not just a rover engine Roland at ACR is passionate about his builds and you get the same treatment as if it were a Dakar racecar, everything is built from stratch and is improved from basic things like the new block used gets bored out and anti slip sleeves are inserted to ensure the block never has the porous issue, there are heaps of improvements it's then dyno'd and shipped.
I got it for $8k plus shipping which might be another grand depending who takes it, much less if it sails

23rd October 2012, 12:18 AM

I will be interested in the range and economy you achieve with the new 3.9. I am still in the process myself of completing a rebuild of the driveline of my Stage One ute. I have rebuilt the 3.5 as a 3.9 and also reconditioned the gearbox. My intention is also to do a bit of traveling in the North West. Wouldn't mind heading to the Kimberly as I have never been up that far.

Looking forward to following the progress of your 101 build. I really do like 101's and maybe one day will try and get my hands on one.

What is a remote oil filter mount??

I bought all this gear from Merlin motorsports in the uk got it in five days

lardy
1st November 2012, 09:44 AM
52763It allows the oil filter to be placed on the chassis so as not to damage it, which as i plan to use the oil filter housing on the new engine a straight down rover one, it'll enable me to do that without smashing the oil filter on the axle under articulation

101RRS
1st November 2012, 10:12 AM
52763it'll enable me to do that without smashing the oil filter on the axle under articulation

Thanks for that - I am building a 4.6 to go into my 101 and will most likely go with the 4.6 oil pump etc so the oil filter will hang down instead of up like the 101 3.5 engine. I was thinking about clearance but had not got around to asking the question online.

So your research has shown that the oil filter will hit the axles housing ????

I assume you buy it as a kit from Merlin - the kit containing a cover over the old oil filter housing, the remote mount and pipes to join them. What sort of price??

Thanks

Garry

1st November 2012, 11:49 AM
It's 5/8 fit and I'll get the hoses made up as I prefer the security of plumbed in pipes, as for the oil filter housing - oil pump cover I will include a shot in this piece, including the oil cooler although I am not game to unpack that until its to be fitted as to protect it,here are the prices and part numbers:
M-oc25-10bsp mocal 25 row oil cooler 5/8bsp £134.55
M-rh8lr mocal remote filter head 1/2 bsp left-right £29.84
M-Tga-10bsp mocal temp gauge adapter 5/8 bsp £38.12
M-v8-cover mocal rover v8 oil pump cover £105.06
I'll have to refer back to your questions again as I can't see them on the iPhone at the moment so if I have not covered all your questions I'll post again.
With ref to your 4.6 are you not concerned the brakes will be under rated for the largest of the rover v8's ?
52766
Have you taken all the external furniture off the old v8 engine yet?
I guessed you have noted that the remote gear lever needs to be cut and welded with a u shape in it to negotiate the plenham have you done yours yet mate?
Regards Andy.

1st November 2012, 11:52 AM
Hi again Garry,
Yeah my understanding is that the 101 was designed with the oil filter in that format because the axle gives a crack to the oil filter in the normal position.
Have you any thoughts on tyres for your 101 and have got any quotes ?

Thanks for the information - not a cheap modification but one probably worth while.

A larger engine in a 101 makes it cruise a little better and importantly climb hills but only marginal increases top speed. 101 brakes in good condition are up to the task but do have to be kept in good condition - the issue like all series vehicles is not so much braking power but erratic braking - also remember a GS weighs a lot less than your box.

My 3.5 is still in the 101 and running so will not come out until the new engine is built and ready to go in.

Modifying the gear lever is only required if you go a Gems injection system. The mods are not needed if I stay with carbs or go Thor injection. I haven't decided as yet - I obviously have the carbs and do have a Gems system and access to a Thor. Decisions I have yet to make.

Those rims are the zu type?
It looks like they are held on with three studs!

101RRS
1st November 2012, 09:33 PM
The rims are Mach 6 rims made by Mach 5 (if that makes sense) I don't think Zu make them for 101s. They are standard 6 stud 101 pattern. What you can see are the wheel studs for the front wheel step.

Here is my tow bar that I made about 4 weeks ago - follows the basic design of the original landrover version - is secured by the same four bolts. I am not totally confident with my welding skills (but is OK on this job) so I designed it so that it does not rely on the welds for structural integrity. Basically is 12mm plate front and rear of the cross member with square holes cut out at the bottom to take the receiver hitch.

Easy to build (cost about $100 all up), easy to install and works well. HOWEVER you do have to have confidence in the integrity of the 101 rear cross member which applies equally to the OEM pintal arrangement.
