D4 20" Rim Choice

Hi all,

After a little bit of advice. I am not overly turned on by any of the wheel choices on the current D4. Why they don't offer the full selection available in other countries is beyond me.

Anywho, if I had to pick one it would be a 20" rim. I have searched through the forum this morning and haven't seen any talk on rubber for 20" rims. Has anyone got a set of 20" with Cooper's 275/45R20 XL+, if so how do they perform on and off road?

Is there a better rubber choice?

I don't mind the look of the 5 spoke Gloss Black Alloy wheel's which come with 225/50 AT/Y Rated Tyres.

Should I just order a set of 18"s and have them ready to through straight on?

Maybe a hoist for the garage so I can swap between a dress set and a play set.

How can one even consider 20" for off road?

Personally I would not touch 20" for off road work at all as they are only for good sealed roads.
As it is I have the 19" and for an upcoming trip to WA I have fitted Cooper LTZ and I will be careful when driving on unsealed roads, unlike in the Hilux I am currently driving at work in the Pilbera where the tyres are always looking worse for wear although they have plenty of tread; simply cut up by the roads.
If I could get it past the financial controller I would get a set of Gordon's 18" rims he sells. You will end up with a more outback friendly choice of tyres.

I honestly thought you meant a Dress for a second :D:D:D

Hoist would help but a highlift jack gets the job done in under 30 minutes and gets a arm workout that some pay for at a gym.

There was an article in one of the 4x4 magazines on 20" Cooper LTZ's and how well they performed off road.
The only problem is damaging your lovely rims.
I find that with Gordons 18" rims......and the Cooper LTZ's, there is quite a bit of tyre overhang, therfore the rim is way more protected, and as Graeme mentioned, you have a lot more tyre choice with the 18's.

Sounds like you need to gather some more browny points Graeme and go get those rims.;)

Gordon from GEO is probably the best to ask. It will depend on what you want to do with them of course.
IMHO after doing my own homework, I went with the Cooper LTZ 285/60/18 because of my usage of off road, boggy building sites & bitumen roads. After 8,000 Klm's I'm very happy with them.
BTW: This is the tyre that Gordon runs on his own RRS.

I'm sure Gordon can add to this.

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone had any further advice on 20" rim combo with Cooper LTZ's? I don't do a huge amount of off-road, but am planning to get to Fraser Island soon, and wondering if these will do the trick?

I've been told my only options are 17" or 20" rims (I'm after matte black), but from what I have read this might not be true?

I'm in my first Land Rover, a D4, and love it.

Do 17" rims fit the D4?

Depends on the model, 2.7l D4 17" and up yes.
3.0l 18" but Goe only as stated above.larger sizes can be fitted to either model

I've been told they do, I've got the 2.7L D4. I'm checking with a few other suppliers and the Dealer at Southport, so will let you you know.

I have 20's on my RRS with coopers and find them good on road infact better then the conti's it came with.
Offroad they have been fine but i dont think i have really pushed them compared to what others do. Ín the sand they have been fine and I did the Condamine gorge with them and had no problem at all just dropped the pressure at about 30 psi.
