Absolutely gutted. Bought my '99 110 in NSW 6 months ago and brought it down to VIC, needed to get it registered here and RW test showed it needed a few things. ie one of the brake discs was too thin and the ABS light was on.
So took to it in to have new brake discs/pads put on this morning. Just got a call to say they'd found my ABS control unit and sensor is stuffed and will cost me over $7k to replace. I can barely believe that just like that I'm slapped with that kind of bill. Needless to say I don't have that kind of money and don't imagine I will for a long long time. So the most money I've ever spent on anything is now going to be sitting on my drive indefinitely, I can't believe my bad luck.
Starting to regret ever buying the thing....

Before you do anything drastic, I suggest you get a 2nd or 3rd opinion and try and source the parts ex-UK.
For example, the ABS ECU is only GBP150:
LAND ROVER DEFENDER ABS ECU WABCO SRD000110 GENUINE NEW | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-ABS-ECU-WABCO-SRD000110-GENUINE-NEW-/290544061022)

Why can't you get a second hand one......or a second opinion as this is a rare failure on a Defender.

Can you replace the discs (relatively cheap and easy to do at home) and remove the ABS bulb? Then go somewhere else — or does the RWC failure get reported to VicRoads?

Perhaps a call to discuss condition and availability of the ABS unit!

I think if they say "both ABS ECU and the sensor are stuffed" then i would be seeking another opinion. Would be one or other. Rare to have multiple faults in same system. And then order the bits from UK or pre loved local.
Have replaced discs and takes some time but not rocket science. A reasonable DIY and some tools should see you right. Sounds like you may have the time!

Hi p38arover, the discs (and new pads) are now on, they're keeping it overnight to replace a broken fuel pressure regulator.
When the failed RW came back it was by a different garage and they only reported that the light was coming on - they didn't fail it and say "the ABS is stuffed".....I don't think they know much about Landys and don't actually test the ABS mechanism...

Thanks mate, much appreciated, do you know if there's much involved in replacing them ?

I'm really annoyed as I took it into that Land Rover dealership just after I bought it to give it a service / once over. The light only came on when I went to pick it up. Had they spotted the problem it would have been covered by the 3 months warranty I got from the place I bought it....

Just the "ABS light on" was listed on the form, when the mechanic took me through it he said "you'll need to see what's up with that light coming on"...

They are very easy to change - plenty of how-to threads if you google.

If a 1996 D1 ABS system is the same I'm currently wrecking mine. Find out what you need first and contact me if needed.

No worries Ron, I normally would. It was more the fact that someone might have been able to confirm if the D1 ABS system was compatible.

I thought the ABS units could not be rebuilt for about $1000 and no longer needed repair by replacement.

Sorry to hear this but perhaps get some more opinions? In fact if it is true, how about trying to import a part from UK? Or British 4x4 QLD may have a used unit in the shelf?
If you can get it supplied cheaper a mechanic can fit?
I bought a Disco 2 in December last year. A week before Christmas, A week later the AirMass Meter, Air Suspension failed and coolant leaked from the head gasket erupted. Despite having a report done. It all came out the woodwork a week later. Mine sat there for Christmas and Year in heap! I was gutted.
Cost me about $4k to put it all right which included free labour from my dad for the heads which saved me another $2k!.
Glad I stuck it out, it drives so well now! Worth the pain!

I wouldn't take too much notice of the 7K quote I think you are being ripped.
The sensors can be had for 75 Pounds each from Paddocks
You will only need 1 for the rear as the kit they sell does both sides
You will need 2 for the front
The disks are also cheap and easy to do.
I would be really surprised if it was the ABS ECU and think you will find they have quoted you retail for a Modulator.
This crowd in Victoria can reco the units for about 1K
With the problems I have had with them I think 1K is a bit steep they are actually quite simple.

bleedin eck!!!!!
more than likely it'll be a sensor pushed out by having the discs replaced, has anyone tried reseating them??? come on any members in melbourne able to take a squiz for him??
IF the modulator is at fault usually the tc lamp is also illuminated, sounds like a simple sensor issue to me.
don't do anything until someone who knows what they are talking about has a look first..

in our 06 td5 90 the ABS has been removed completely by the previous owner, perhaps you can do the same. we have never had an issue with getting RWC or passing inspections.

I also had mine pass a RWC with the ABS light illuminated. He just said that I'd want to get that checked out - which I did fix. It was just grease in the ABS tone ring after a CV replacement.

Thanks mate, I'll give them a call. Yeah I think he was referring to a modulator not an ecu - not that I have a clue what either of them are! Called it a "control unit" but looking online/ebay etc I see that modulators are much more expensive than ECUs. I'll give that crowd a ring tomorrow and see what they can do.
I sure felt like despairing when I put the phone down today!

If you need a good second opinion, take the vehicle to AMV in Ringwood ASAP. They are honest guys who will tell you the issue(s) and the options. Mention you were refered from AULRO as they have picked up business from here before.
Importantly, they can supply new or second hand parts and also accept customers bringing their own parts in. This helps if you want to shop ebay first before committing to the actual repairs. Well that's been my experience anyway.

There is a modulator bypass solution, there are links on here somewhere. Disco Td5s you can buy a repair kit. Apparently for a Defender there is no Kit???
Mine comes on intermittently, Buy a Nanocom or similar and you will be able to reset yourself.
Mine comes on intermittently and I just reset and ABS works again for a while.
I do need to pull out the modulator and either see if I can repair it or do the bypass. From what I understand the plungers in it can be the issue. Can be from not changing brake fluid often enough as well causing deterioration of the plunger rubber.
Be careful not running ABS, I had my light illuminated last week going to the airport in rainy conditions and with a heavy Defender locked the right hand tyre and had to pulse brake when the traffic went from 100kmph to 40kmph in less than 100metre (Damn Rowley Road exit of Kwinana Fwy, issues there every morning). I made sure I reset it before coming home last night from the airport.
One hint is the Wabco reset seems to require the car to be running, not moving. The normal engine fault reset requires the car to have the ignition one, enegine not running.
The new Nanocom diagnostic tool is about $500 I think and LR resets are a bout $50 each time.
I can not believe there is not a Wabco rebuild kit for the TD5 Defender but there is for the Disco. I have been trying to determine weather the Disco one is useable, but do not have a definitive problem. This seems to be a very common problem with the WABCO modulators.
Hope this helps
Craig

There is a kit avail for rebuilding early p38 (95-99, I think) wabco abs too. The boys at hardrange.com sell it for the guy who puts them together.
