Cuppa on the run...
I have a 2008 (Puma) 110 and want to rig a folding shelf to carry a stove such as a Coleman dual fuel for a quick brew.
I've seen a couple of guys who have made such a modification but to support the shelf they've first replaced the existing door lining with chequerplate or 1.6mm aluminium and they didn't have Pumas, which seem to have different contours in the rear door.
Does anyone know of anyone who's replaced the rear door lining of a Puma with an aluminium panel and if so, pros and cons?
I think once this is done I should be ok to figure out the rest.
Cheers

Hey Bobby,
Dolium do one that clips to the side below the rear side windows and it won't interfere with that nice set of drawers you just fitted....

You Defender owners are lucky — you can add any accessory to the outside of the car and looks like it was meant to go there. We RR owners can't spoil the lines of our mounts. :(

I would have to agree with patclan. For 500 smackers I would expect to have a fancy coffee machine included. Press a button in the dash and and then pull over 5 mins later to a nice fluffy coffee.

I love this website. Thanks guys, some good comments and tips.
I'm inclined to agree that $500 is crazy for what it is but it's likely to be a good indication of a couple of hours labour.
I have no issues with going to Bunnings for some materials and a sausage sanger then fabricating something myself, I'm only concerned about taking the door lining off and breaking something important....
Is there a special technique involved?

Go to Big W or Kmart and get yourself a $20 folding table. Chuck it on the roof rack with some occy straps and spend $480 on coffee/tea/beer/snags and replacement tables when they perish. You should be good for 20 years of all (excluding the beer!).
And Ron, shouldn't you bring out photo's of the optional factory accessory P38a picnic table for the 'fender lads? Just don't tell them the factory price!

This is it. It is the cover over the spare wheel well. The table cloth is part of the accessory kit. The picnic basket was a gift from RangeRovers.net. I didn't really open that bottle of Grange — we had that later on my birthday.

The only reason I bought the County is so I can stop having nightmares about not getting ownership of ALL the factory P38 accessories... still looking though!!! :D

Bugger carrying the useless gas stoves. Buy yourself a bush kettle or similar (I know the Aust Geographic shop sell one). I have the proper bush kettle and it is one of the best pieces of equipment we have bought. You can use any heat source to boil including just leaves and stick in the centre. We carry a small metho burner.
My wife was hesitant when I bought it about 8 years ago, but know would not be without it.

I have one but don't use it. One cannot carry it in the car after using it as it stinks from the tars/soot inside it.

Craig, I love the idea of the bush kettle/ ecobilly and having used one for the first time a few weeks ago, I'm definitely going to get one - the stove is for those occasions when a fire is out of the question.
I'm going to measure up the door space this weekend to see if I even have enough space for a shelf....and I downloaded the workshop manual so I reckon I'll be able to take the door lining off without too much hassle....as long as I don't break the retaining clips....which may be hard given my tendency to apply ham-fisted brute force to any problem.
Keep the ideas coming

I had to take the back door trim/card off when I fitted the Mulgo gas strut.
Very simple remove grab handle, gentle pri small plastic plate from behind internal door handle off.
Then just work your way around pull with your hands clip by clip, be firm and it will just come away.
Don't forget you wont be able open your drawer with shelf down.
Cheers

Go to Jaycar and buy a set of panel removal tools. I think they cost about $15 from memory buying mine. I sort of get wanting to carry a stove but I find it much easier to carry one of those propane type ovens.
The idea of a table is always a good one. If you put in roller drawers you could always make a lid for the drawers that could double as a table when the drawers are extended or be fully removable, something I am thinking about.
Cheers

I recently fitted a new unit comprising stove and sink :) Works really well especially when it's raining.

Breakfast of champions, Jerry. Lovely set-up mate, well done.
Thanks Drover, I'll take it off this weekend as I've ordered the Mulgo gas strut and will see if there's room for a shelf. I might check the dimensions of the dual fuel stove too so I can try to minimise the shelf size.
Good work gents...always nice to see and hear so many good ideas and different solutions to our need for convenience!

Do you have a rear wiper? there is a mod to put the intermittent relay on the rear wiper, I changed my front one to the programmable one so have the old intermittent one to put in the back I plan to do it but not until I need to take the back door card off, I think there is a wire needs moved on the relay for it to work but could be a good mod if you have the back off anyway, if you have a wiper that is :)

Another thing you dont have to worry about with a Defender Ron.;) And my Eco Billy lives in the vehicle.

My Bush Kettle goes back in it's cardboard box and I haven't noticed any smell from it. Mind you after bush camping for a few days everything smells of smoke anyway.....
I made a fold down shelf for the rear door of my defender years ago, I'll have to take a picture & post it. I saw someone selling the shelves and based mine on their design.
A piece of 12mm ply covered with marine carpet, plastic hinges from a boat shop, ute cover elastic loops to hold it up when not in use and some nylon webbing.
I had to take the door card off to work out where I could place the screws so that had something other than the door card to screw into but otherwise it was straightforward.

I have a very sensitive nose. I can't work in my garage if the person across the road is smoking (about 100 metres away).

I hadn't heard of them but just looked them up on the net.
Looks OK and they come in several sizes whereas most of the others there's just one size.
My original Bush Kettle is over 10 years old now and I'd probably buy another one if I lost it. Mind you I have an original in the plywood box with the mugs, tea/sugar/coffee containers etc. that I picked up at a trash & treasure market a while back.
It would be good to get feedback from someone who has used the Rimfire before buying ....

Here are a few pics of the 'shelf' on my Defender rear door.
I was worried about heat from the stove melting the vinyl on the door card but haven't had any problems. I use an occy strap to hold the door firmly open so it doesn't move while I'm having a brew.
It doesn't restrict access to the rear of the vehicle too much.

12mm exterior grade ply covered with marine carpet. Plastic hinges from a boat shop, tarp ties and buttons they latch over from.....can't remember, nylon webbing from Bunnings.
Much bigger and it's in the way, any smaller and it's probably not much use.
