D3 purchase / dented Fuel Tank

I've been looking at buying a D3 and (yes I'm a newb) have been told the Fuel Tank guard and Fuel Tank are damaged / Impact has bent the guard and dented the tank but no hole...

I have not yet seen the damage but what sort of situation would do this ... where on the vehicle is the tank located .... I am aware the rear wheel is in the normal (aft) position on this vehicle.

Is the tank in the middle between the front and rear axle? and would I assume the vehicle has been hung up on a rock or log when offroad ..

would this signify a hard life or would it be 'par for the course' for offroading in the north of sydney (guessing)

I would be grateful for any any comments

The fuel tank is underneath the right side of the vehicle mostly below the rear passenger seat and floor.

In the good old days you could drain the tank and pressurise it with compressed air to pop it back out - not sure if you could do that with a D3 tank though.

I once dented the fuel tank guard.

The guard was replaced, with the plastic fuel tank being popped back into shape.

No subsequent problems.

Is the car kitted up for serious off roading? If not it might be a one off. I give mine a lot of chalenges but draw the line at hanging it up on rocks which the damage you mention seems to suggest. Is there any other underbody damage? Noted some used car shonky types painted underbody in secondhand road cars to hide rust. If the car looks mickey mouse perhaps check if its underside had been painted black recently to hide any other scraps and damaged bits. It could be a one off of course. I would think damage to the spare wheel cover, rubber and rim fairly likely if draging over rocks was a common trait of the prior owner.
