View Full Version : Transmission Purge

I had the transmission purged 2 weeks ago, all the old oil was pumped out through the oil cooler inlet pipe and new oil introduced into the oil cooler outlet pipe until all the old oil was replaced.
Wasn't cheap, not much change out of $1200, however the difference is profound, gearchanges are back to what they should be..seamless, the very slight drumming that had started has gone and the car is once again as smooth as silk.
I recommend this service and will have it done every 50000 k's.

$1200 wow seems excessive. 20l of fluid is $500 and I doubt they used that much.
Probably a good idea to drop the pan and replace the filter as well.

that was done and included. the process takes a bit of time as access to the oil cooler is required and the inlet/outlet have to be connected to the pump to extract the oil and replace with the new oil.

Seems to be around the going rate though

I had the fluid changed on mine before it was shipped out here (at 115,000 k's) along with having the latest gearbox software. The difference when I finally drove it for the first time was huge, the gearchanges haven't been this smooth for years. Highly recommended.

I still think the oil must be made of unicorns tears though for the price

Yes, Unicorn Tears sounds about right, but with a bit Unobtainium added, so I have heard.

The oil may be worth the cost however as it is amazing how fresh oil can improve the shifting functions within the automatic transmission.

Just had my 96000 service done by Graeme Cooper in St Peters, Sydney.

They drained the transmission and refilled with "ZF 6 speed fluid" aka unicorn tears. (mostly: popped the plug and waited rather than running through the cooler/etc to expel all the old oil).

The bill shows 6 litres @ $30.40, and a plug @ $8, + GST to both; the GC mechanic advised they always recommend changing transmission fluid at every C service (48000 km) and "haven't had any come back" (of course, absence of proof is not proof of absence :-)
