View Full Version : Safari VS OL snorkels

Evening folks.
One of the items on my list for the next few weeks is a snorkel.
Looked at both Safari via ARB and whatever snorkel Opposite Lock uses.
OL is cheaper, and i'd prefer to go to OL as i feel their customer service is streets ahead of ARB, but thats just me.
Any arguments for or against either snorkel, or is it purely an aesthetic thing?
I spose I could always by a safari and have OL fit it.
I'm game to try fitting everything else, but i don't think I could bring myself to go slicing into my beloved disco :D
Cheers

I thoght the same way, but once you triple check the cut points and make the first pass, the rest is easy. Plus by doing it yourself you have the piece of mind its done well. The snorkel itself is not the problem, its the joins where the aircleaner sits that are not well sealed. And being aluminium/alloy, the cut should not rust.

Is there anywhere you can get mantecs in aus or do they have to be imported?
OL just said they'd do me a safari fully installed for about $120 cheaper than ARB so its getting tempting...

Do you know how to weld? I'm sure Orange ahs a good exhaust shop, get them to make a few bends up for you (3 inch i think) and weld them together with straight pipe and make your own Mantec, bends should cost $10-$20 each, once all welded together take to the powder coaters, wait for them to run the colour you want so it's cheap. Then fit a Donaldson pre-cleaner on top. the result of this is the cheapest snorkel you can get, but also the best design money can buy IMO and you've done it yourself :)
I'm making one for my tdi, and eventually the td5 when it's mine lol

well....can i weld?
Short answer yes....
Long answer yes, but at a pretty basic level.
Last time i was welding i made the mistake of doing it in shorts....
Not something im going to do again :D

HAHAHA yeah been there done that
Dad taught me to mig weld when i was about 12, i've built a dune buggy and a trailer so far amongst other smaller things.
I'm in year 12 at the moment and last weekend dragged out the old stick and a huge assortment of rods and the scrap bin and taught myself to stick weld nicely the other day, not as hard as i thought, then i had to weld some stainless for a D&T project (the reason to learn stick), was good, but then i like fabbing things myself.

Does a Donaldson filter fit on the Mantec? I like the look of them on a Disco, Where would you recommend buying from, if you don't mind? So many questions, only so much Bundy :D cheers, Bob

Mine's from Island4x4 in the UK.
I'll let you know if I can fit a Donaldson prefilter
MR LR
24th June 2012, 09:44 PM
You sure it only cost $90, they are all over $300, and i can't find it on Island 4x4's website.
I think fitting a Donaldson pre-cleaner would look stupid on a mantec as the inlet is raked back, so it would essentially make the pre-cleaner invalid anyway, i think i'll build my own.

Oh i see, yeah i have a D1 and D2 and i'm pretty sure Muppet has a D2 aswell, the prices for them are all over $300 and they have a different style of intake meaning a cyclonic filter won't work, hence me wanting to make one.
Cheers

I was thinking it would be simple to remove the bent end of the Mantec, & fit the Donaldson to the vertical pipe. The only problem would be the relative diameters of the vertical pipe, and the Donaldson bottom flange. Even so, should be easy enough to make an adapter. Bob

But there is no vertical pipe... it is layed back at an angle and the head designed to accomodate this

could always have some pipe bent to allow you to mount the pre cleaner vertically, sort of adapter piece

25th June 2012, 04:27 PM
That's an idea, or just cut the top off the mantec where it is bent to near vertical and get a piece made up to slide over and clamp on, done right it would look ok i think, still i'll opt for the DIY snorkel as then i can get the lines of the mantec and do what i want in the guard and at the intake end

IMO the only problem with all the plastic snorkels is they look like **** bolted to the side of a nice shaped and smooth lined car like a Discovery, that's why i like the discreet, 'quiet' mantec, and not the fully sick stainless ones LOL. Dunno if i'd be keen to grind my way through a nice, new coated snorkel though haha, if i make my own i'll pauint them Epsom Green (D1) and Alverston Red (D2) respectively, maybe i shoudl make patterns and produce them?!?

Mine arrived today, and it's actually a Britpart raised air intake
Still happy with that for $90
The OD of the pipe at the top is 70mm

Does the Britpart "raised air intake" give you a good seal where it joins in to the original intake ?
The reason I ask is because the LR "raised air intake" offered for the D4 does not seal and is not worth a pinch of **** if you intend to use it driving through deep water. Might be OK for keeping a bit of dust out of the engine, but even for that, not as good as at least one after market "snorkel" available for the D4.

It will seal well on the Defender, and some Sikaflex should help it.

Probably nothing. The only difference between the Safari snorkel and the factory snorkel, is the Safari snorkel has "Safari Snorkels" moulded into the side of it, and the Land Rover snorkel has "Land Rover" AND "Safari Snorkels" moulded into the side of it.
I fitted a Safari to my Disco2. After damaging the front PS panel and having it repaired, I didn't notice for about 1 year that they had also replaced the snorkel, and I would never have noticed except the new one had LR also stamped into it.
