Intermediate shaft, transfer box, which way is out?

Just droped the transfer box out of the D2 and want to slide the intermidiate shaft to do the O rings.
I've undone the nut, removed the retainer but can't get the shaft to move.
Before I go to the next size knockometer I thought I'd ask which way it slides.
I'm assuming (looked at Rave for both the Disco and Def) the shaft slides to the rear.
This would mean tapping it from the threaded end, is that right?
Any thing else to consider while I move/remove the shaft?

Did a search for "intermediate" and got 6 pages of threads, gave up at page 3 as most about where the leak is.
Didn't find any on this question though.

The shaft comes out the front of the case, so the t/case needs to be separated from the gearbox.

I've got the box in the garage so that bit's done.
Looks like I tap it from the blind(leaky) end.

No you need to tap it from the threaded end. It moves to the front. You don't need to remove it just move it out enough to replace the O rings.
I always fill the blind end up with sealant after the shaft has been refitted, but its optional.

Take care that the thrust washer is correctly located on the threaded (rear) end of the shaft on reassembly. It's internal, between gear and case. It may drop out of position when you dislocate the shaft to replace the O ring at that end. The picture in RAVE shows the arrangement. The sealant helps a lot - use some brake cleaner to degrease the surface so the sealant will adhere.

Well blow me down the shaft does come out the front, it's just I confused my front and rear:angel:
I gave it slightly heavier tap on the nut and it moved:)
Only slid it enough to remove the O ring.
A new nut fitted twice.
I put the old O ring back on before I realised I hadn't taken the mew one out of the bag;)
