Hey, I was wondering if anybody on here has child seats in a Series 2a SWB?
And any information as to how safe/legal/hard it would be to do ?
I am contemplating purchasing my first Series Landy ,but I need to be able to transport my two little girls . So if I can't get the kid's seats in I cannot get the Landy.
Any help with this will be much appreciated.

Depending on it's age, a IIa might not have seat belts in which case you'd need to fit them first. In any case, it will only have a 3 point seat belt on the passenger seat, the middle seat will probably have a lap belt if it has anything.
How old are the girls? If they only need a booster seat (the 100mm or so pads) then that would be fairly easy on the passenger seat. If they need the full "child seat" with its own securing straps etc., then that would be more tricky. In any case, I suspect you'd be limited to one seat unless you also fitted a lap/sash in the middle seat.
Legally its a minefield, I suspect. Kids in the front is frowned upon (and not just because of air bags), and kids in the middle seat might be worse. Fitting child seats to a vehicle that may not have even have seatbelts might require official inspection to be viewed as safe and legal.
In any case, if genuine safety is a priority I have to say that a SWB Land Rover from the 60's probably isn't the best vehicle!

its easy...
providing you already have seatbelts in it all you need is the anchor system from any of the defenders/counties to attach the seats strapping to.
you can also have an anchor point attached onto the capping of the front of the tub providing the childs seat is setup for very close anchoring.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) the new child restraint laws are fully retrospective.
You can have a child seat in a ute if there are no rear seats but you must have a central mount for the harness/child seat. If you have the mounting points fitted and engineered you could fit child seats legally.
My two young boys used to like coming out in my Series 1 (no seatbelts) then the law changed so only the older one was allowed to travel. Now the younger one is 7 (and above a certain weight) he can travel in the Series 1 again.

If it's earlier than 1969 you can fit seatbelts and child restraints and then have them inspected and certified.
If its 1969 or later, headlights in the wings 2a, then you must apply for a vehicle modification permit before fitting restraints for child seats.
Give them a ring for your piece of mind, then go buy the 2a!

I don't know about Perth, but in NSW Child Restraint fitting stations can install and certify child restraints.
The real issue is if you wish to fit seats in the rear tub. If it were my children, there is absolutely no way I would be allowing any child to ride sideways in a car. The evidence is in and the risks of severe spinal injuries and death riding sideways are not worth taking. If you want to take kids in the rear of the car then you need to fit forward facing seats, even if they fold up to the side when not in use. The same as third row seats in Discovery 2 and Jap wagons.
Similar to this type which incorporate the restraint in the seat.

Great thread thanks Briza:)
My next job is to look at fitting a booster seat in the front of Mary, my plan was to use a lap seatbelt, booster seat and one of the aftermarket harnesses fixed to the Capping of the tub.
I grew up driving around in the back of an Austin champ with no belts or roof, great memories that I like to share with my kids now.

Me and the boy out for a drive, not sure what the Nanny state thinks about this;)
Used the rear winch Bracket for the child restraint which is a bit of 1/2 inch steel plate. Should be strong enough!

There are a couple of approved anchorages that can be used in that situation, the main one is one originally designed for the rear of RRclassics (actually designed by a member of the RRC of NSW after having 2 kids die in a RR roll-over). The bracket is a post that bolts to the floor the top of which is the anchorage above seat height.
The second type is used in white vans and is a bar that bolts to each side and runs across behind the seats.

Thanks everyone for all the useful replies and links. I think I have some more research to do.
Simon, I would like to see what you end up doing with" Mary" in regards to your child seat.

Hi All.
Well I finally had a chance to do some work in the shed today. Managed to fit the booster seat and harness. The anchor point is bolted through the cab infill piece and plated behind.
As mentioned earlier, legally its a mine field but a 2a doesn't exactly have a high ANCAP rating anyways;)

I took Thomas out for his first proper cruse today, he had a ball. Was a bit cold for him until the heater warmed up!

Reading this with interest as I have my 90 but have two young boys who want to go out in "the blue car" all the time. I have a kids car seat in the front but need to find a way to put seats in the back that I can take both of them.
