I've recovered one of those long hunks of junk before, stuck in the exact same way, however i just winched it down with the Land Rover. Patrols are rubbish, don't know why anyone likes them.

Cheers

Maybe "Reliability", or Value for Money...

Never seen either of them in a Patrol... we had a few as trade-ins back in the day, dad said they were actually disgusting cars, and had problems too, oh and as to value, i think spine reconstructions cost more than a Vogue...

Some friends of ours had a 3.0 Tdi, what an abismal hunk of ****, they missed camping trips due to problems with that car.

Real Smart people too had strap hooked on to the tow ball.
What sort of recovery point would be on an evo?

The Nissans aren't all bad,
I was on a LROCV club trip at Mt Tullarook in the 80's and a brand spanking new GQ Patrol straight from the showroom was there and it scared the heck out of a lot of LR people about how good they were in the rough, Sign of things to come & some thought Death Knell of the LR (The disco wasn't released yet)

One bad section only the GQ and a near new V8 110 ware able to negotiate. They are really very good off road, even standard.

No matter how one eyed landy you are they really are a good off road truck, At least they still have Live Axles across the model range.

Apart from being a soul-less piece of Jap Crap there isn't actually much wrong with them, (with the exception of the 3 liter diesel grenade)

Maybe you're right... Thinking of a local businessman who upgraded from Toyota to a D4 diesel (when the Labor party was handing out money...)

At least he did'nt miss his ( four ) camping trips like your unfortunate Nissan owner... just that he came back from THREE on a flat-bed.

The last was 1130+km away, with the caravan.

Not even a minor warranty issue with his new Landcruiser

Never had a problem with any of our Landies, because we MAINTAIN them and don't treat them like a washing machine. If you just drive them, good luck to you, enjoy your ride with the towie. That being said my Discovery has been towed home on a car trailer, but only because i drowned it, could have done that to a Toyota aswell

OH What a lot of Bollocks,
On my Last trip around Australia (outside of major cities) I saw a Total of Four Landrovers, One Defender on the Tanamai & three Discos on sealed roads, ALL THREE Discos were on the back of Fladbeds.

I saw Thousands of Japanese 4WD, only 2 on flat tops, both 80 series Toyotas, one at Port Augusta, one at Broome (that one was mine  ) So my conclusions 75% of Landrovers Broken down, 100% of Discos broken down , less than 1% of Jap crap broken down. You can't say all those Toyotas were maintained perfectly, (but mine WAS !!)

Never said anything like that, Toyota's are reliable, i admit that, they are bloody good things, but boring and soul-less. I owned an 80 series for about 3 weeks, the fella drove it further than i ever had on his test drive. I had picked up my Disco the week before that, was my aunties car and i was supposed to sell it for her, but i bought the Disco and sold the appliance, at time's i've regretted it, but the good times out-weigh the bad. All i said is we've never had a problem with our Disco's, what i mean is they've never been on a flatbed, we've been able to fix them all on the side of the road.

All i said in my initial post was Patrols are crap, they are reliable crap (except the 3 litre), but still crap IMO. But i'm biased.

Cheers

Honestly, I wouldn't mind a GQ shorty just for a bit of a muck around truck.
Personally I think the best 4WD vehicle is the one you own, nothing more.
Unless its a hummer, i hate those things :D
I'd have no dramas taking my disco out through the NT, through the simpson, wherever.
As long as I had it checked out before the trip, kept an eye on things during the trip.
I think LandRovers are more capable in many ways, they just need alot of preventative maintenance to keep them going.
Toyotas need work too, its just that seeing as they're normally uncomfortable, noisy and underpowered, you tend not to notice.
Yeah, i'm biased, but i think the thing with toyotas is they will still run when they're half dead. Helps you to get out of wherever you are, but at least if a landrover isn't working, you know theres an issue.
Wow that sounds so bloody obvious, but hopefully you get the idea.

I actually used to own a Patrol and I can tell you now I never had a problem with it. The seats were extremely comfortable and my wife (who has Rheumatoid Arthritis) loved the seats as well. It did everything that was asked of it without fuss or trouble. One problem I had was with the two wheel drive in the wet, the back end used to get out of shape very easily. I got rid of it as I had no feelings for it as a car at all. Not like the feelings I get with my D3 (warts and all).

yeah bigmac,
I'm curious to know what recovery points are on the evo. maybe a 'track' tow hook ;)

fanging that evo on a hard packed beach would be alot of fun though...just not cleaning it afterwards...

The better video is the one linked at the end of this, the Evo running off the dyno. Of course with only 2 straps, and then to a single point to the rear what do they expect.

I usually use 10-12 straps.
