TD5 starting in winter

Hi guys

Just wondering at what temperature (read cold) will a TD5 be harder to start?

Mines been through winters before, including the snow, but this winter seems to take longer on cranking before it slowly stutters to life - even after the glow plug lights are off.

Should I start looking at new glow plugs or is this a warning to more serious issues?

how goods the battery and how fast are you cranking?

Start with the battery, both my td5 utes start at the touch of the starter even as low as minus 10, could be the glow plug relay if the battery is all good.

Try cleaning your Try cleaning you battery cables etc, you may find the battery is on the way out and is just not cranking the motor quick enough. Try either charging battery over night and seeing how it goes in the morning or jump starting it. Both these will get voltage right up to where it should be.
Had this with my Tdi and the Td5 likes more cranking power then that. Hence why I went for red top optima in my D2

Would this also be the case if it starts fine when its warm?
Or could it be the warmer air temps from the day that makes it start normal when I head home?

2002 td5 260K i have the same problem. i have fitted an external 150A push button relay system and have cut all the engine glow plug loom and rewired it to a push button system. when i warm the plugs i can see the dash lights slightly dim so i see its taking power, i am convinced the plugs are hot but its not the problem. as soon as mine starts it lets out a big puff of grey diesel not a black puff but its not oil burning. what is yours doing ? i have found foot to the floor helps. btw as soon as it starts it runs fantastic.

I haven't noticed any grey smoke, but then again it's still dark when I leave in the mornings. If I happen to leave later in the morning it will most likely start normally so I'm not sure what to do with it.
The glow plug lights definatley stay on for longer but as you said they don't make a difference.
Haven't tried the Foot to the floor, Im away for a few weeks though.
I'd much rather not have to floor it to get it going though, rather know what the cause is so I can fix it
Also yes once it's going there's nothing wrong with it at all, and restarting isn't a problem

I live in castle hill Sydney, so waxing shouldn't be too much of a possibility. I buy vortex diesel from caltex when I can, and try to get 7/11 when I can't get to a caltex
