i've only used the cheap 'spinifex' brand double mattress from anaconda. we've had it for a few years now.

pro's: insulatation from cold ground - most are 100mm thick, ease of setup, relatively cheap, can take a lot of abuse - kids love to jump on it like a trampoline, and even when punctured it still provides insulation and a level of comfort

con's: takes up a lot of room when packed so limited to car camping; can developed indentations

if the kids are young i'd recommend a cheap one like spinifex as it is harder to damage than more expensive compact self inflating mattresses.

Recently purchased 2 EXPED megamats, they go together to make a double, most comfortable camp bed I have ever had. Because they are two and not one they pack down to a manageable size. Found them at 30% off sale otherwise a bit expensive.

Exped are the way to go. Ours are rated to -30 or something. They are super comfortable and pack to the size of large milo can. Highly recommended from me, I've probably spent 60 nights altogether sleeping on one.

We bought a piece of double foam from Clarke Rubber. It was relatively cheap (~$60) and they had various thicknessness. Downside is, it's very big to transport and does get damp underneath if you don't air it every day or two. We haven't found it a big problem though. Stand it up in the tent every second day and we tie it on the roof rack for transport. We had the same problem as you...got tired of an air bed going down. The foam has been great for the price.
