When I brought my Defender and was on the way to have it Rego'd, it sprung a rather major water leak. Thinking it was just the water pump I got it towed home and changed the pump over. Turned out it was the welch plug behind the timing cover. Long story short I ended up having to rush to get it back together to get it Rego'd or the RWC would have run out. Since then it's had a quite bad oil leak from the timing cover.

I rang around a few of the Land Rover specialists the other day thinking this time I would have the work done by someone competent (ie. not me). I thought I would be in the $600-$800 mark to do this, plus whilst there change the timing belt as it has to be removed anyways. The prices I got from three of the local specialists were between $1200-$1500! Double what I expected.

So I've now decided to undertake this myself. I've priced parts and when I get paid I will be ordering them.

I was wondering if there was a kind hearted Land Rover owner around the Eastern Suburbs area that would be able to help/guide me through the reassembly process. I'm happy to pull it all down first and do all the dirty work. I'm also happy to pay in cash/beer/food if someone is willing to help out.

i have to do the same job on my 200tdi.. never done it before so same position as you.

I have the 200tdi engine workshop manual (pdf) and watched 'trailfitter2' videos on youtube which are quite helpful for tips and seeing how much work is involved.

Im off to UK on monday and plan to bring back a timing belt replacement kit and crank locking tool so I can get get straight to it when I get back.

I'm hoping clean mating surfaces, good gaskets and sealant will get me through without any leaks.
