I got woke up this morning to the sound of multiple radial engines over head.

Got up to see a Catalina circling nearby accompanied by what looked like a Mitchell Bomber (twin engine - twin vertical stabilizers) and something like a Harvard or Wirraway (from a distance looked like a Zero so most likely a Harvard or Wirraway).

I know you lot always want pics so got the camera out but wasn't to capture anything of good quality but at least got something.

Anyone know why they were in Canberra.

Looks more like a Lockheed 12 than a Mitchell. (I've had a flight in a Mitchell last year and I built a control line flying model of one years ago so I'm fairly sure that's not a Mitchell.)

You could be right - when looking at the size it did look a little small for a Mitchell (compared to the size of the Catalina) but it did look a little larger than a Lockheed. While not visible in the vid it seemed to have some sort of perspex bubble on the rear fuselage but it might have just been light reflecting off it.

They were a bit far away and the Catalina was to only one I could positively identify. It was 3 degrees outside and I was in bare feet and short sleeves so was getting a bit cold to hang around to try an confirm identities.

Log on and listen to the Macca broardcast on ABC radio this morning - One of the pilots from Temora was interviewed and describes the aircraft and the reason for them doing the Canberra flyover. Two from Temora and one from Wollongong.

There is a Hudson at Temora. Not sure if it is based there but it flies there often.. I would say that it probably it. Especially if you saw a perspex bubble on the rear fuselage.
I would love to see a Catalina close up..any fly in any warbird.
I think the Cat might be based at HMAS Albatross.

That is it - just looked at it on google - the bubbles match what I saw.

I think the Catalina is out of Albion Park just south of Wollongong.

I guess the "fighter" is not clear enough to make out - the wing shape is pretty unique though.

Thanks

Yep ,was listening to Macca this morning.
It was a Hudson and a Wirraway out of Temora
And the Catalina was from the south coast
They were making a fly over at the War Memorial,in memory of Australia's greatest maritime disaster. The sinking of the POW ship Monevideo Maru.
Over 1,000 Australian POWs lost their lives when it was sunk by the Allies.

Would it be a waste to drop them on the ranga?
I think not.
