At the weekend I finally finished the resto job on my steering wheel.

You can see it had cracks around the spokes and the finish was very worn
Step 1
I stripped the boss and rim using MEK (Methyl ethyl ketone) quite nasty stuff need to wear breathing protection and butyl rubber gloves as it disolves other rubber gloves.
Step 2
I bead blasted the hard to get to places and the corrosion from the Aluminium boss.
Step 3

I ground out the cracks with a pointed die grinder.
Step 4

I used a metal reinforced aviation grade Epoxy Glue (the grey stuff in the photo) to fill and level where I had ground out the cracks. I then filled any inperfections with a 2 part stopping putty which is a fancy name for a really fine grade of bog.
Step 5

It then was primed using an Epoxy Primer and left to cure. I then sanded the grip area with 400 wet and dry.
Step 6

The rim was then painted using a flat 2 part Polyurethane paint which is extremely hard wearing.
Step 7

I painted the boss using 2 pack automotive paint.
Step 8

Using VHT wrinkle finish I painted the horn button surround. I also painted the horn button using some left over 2 pack.
