View Full Version : Got Grover "chipped"

Folks - just thought I'd share with you some useful info, at least for Puma owners.....I was getting the old EGR valve blues again (Already on my 2nd valve)....stuttering power and sounding like a sick chook on engine shut down....etc etc

Anyway, I was going to look at the Alive and BAS remaps from England as they disable the EGR, but Warren at MR Automotive alerted me to the Bruce Davis Performance flash upgrade. These guys are based in Sydney, and remap the ECU for our conditions. It is a cheaper option too, as it's a simple flash upgrade. And the remap permanently closes off the EGR valve :BigThumb:

So now it's done....No more surging, no more egr squeaks and squeals on gear changes etc etc.

And holy crap...does Grover get up and go now ;)....there is a dramatic lift in power and torque, but I'm getting the same economy.

So if Puma owners are looking for a remap, or a way to "blank off" the EGR without issue.... Bruce Davis Performance upgrades are another option worth considering. :) Yum yum.....chips.

Hi Scallops

What sort of cost are we looking at for a PUMA flash upgrade?

Feel free to PM me if you don't wish to post it here.

Bobby

Well, I'm happy to tell you, but I haven't actually been billed for it yet :D....the flash is VIN specific and it took Bruce a few goes to get mine to work, so because I had already been to MR twice without success to get it done (Bruce emails it to MR), they couriered me the nancom type gadget and I installed it myself...hence the lack of a bill yet....but I think it's in the order of $700.00.

The purchaser gets updates as they are available and gets hard copy of their original factory map and the BDP upgrade map and associated documentation.

I'll post back when I know the actual cost :)

I think you will find that Bruce Davis uses "Alive" tuning under licence.

The main difference is that you do not get the remap tool to remove or change the programmes your self.

If you purchase direct from BAS or Alive will get the Re-Map tool to keep. You can store up to 3 maps, each map can be custom designed for your personal needs or preferences.

For example I have a towing map with lots of low down power, a stock map with EGR closed and speed limiter removed and finally the factory map.

I can swap then any time it takes about 10 minutes.

A BAS or Alive is about $900AUD's.

You can buy the gadget to do remaps from Bruce Davis too - it costs more and I don't need it, so just went for the remap. :) Suspected it was one of the English variants as Bruce had to email someone over there to get mine to play ball. But the Alive site suggests you can just buy the thing online, then simply plug and play....do you not need to send them your original map to have the remap made?

The unit is commercially available. The manufacturer will custom print the interface with your branding - if you order enough units!

They come in Slave and Master units.... (Simplified)

A slave will VIN lock, and to use on another vehicle just needs the vehicle it VIN locked to returned completely to factory and then can be cleared and used on another vehicle - starting again.

A master will write / read etc over and over.

BD maps are no different to other Alive / BAS maps, in that they are written by Gary or Pete, based on the original file being sent to them for modification.

The fact that BD sell Atric would indicate that Gary is writing the files for BD.

An "Aussie conditions" tune would be nothing more than a tune level which works here... What works in Tasmania will not feel or perform the same in the tropics...

Yeah, thanks for the info. According to MR, Bruce does a deal of work himself on the map, so perhaps the base software comes from Alive with BD tweaking it a little....MR didn't know anything about Alive (or BAS)....:) They reckon the trick is to get them running without smoking, and mine seems perfect as it is now, which they credit to Bruce in Sydney...

Just a quick question about this topic.
I have a RRC and I am thinking of acquiring a new Defender. Would chipping it like this have any ramification on warranty?

Thanks.

I think so...you'd need the gadget to restore original map before (or if) it went to LR during your warranty period...easy to do though, takes 5 or so minutes...even I can do it! ;)

Just what Scallops said, I had my BAS map in for the last year of the warranty.

I just had to swap the tuned map for the stock before taking it to LR for service. They say it is undetectable that a tuned map was ever loaded...seemed to work as I was never questioned about it during warranty repairs.

Cheers

There is no commercially available remap available for the 2.2TDCi at the moment.

Not yet but BAS are very close,

This is a copy of a post from Pete Bell from a UK forum "Defender2"

Do you know if there are any plans to do a 2.2 remap as it could do with some finessing.

Hi
The 2.2 is done we are at the moment working on a way to feasible and commercially pratical to install it onto public cars. I should be able to provide more info in the not to distant future.

PS, thank you all in the thread for your great comments on our tuning and customer support.

I have been waiting until the end of warranty to chip mine as I found it a hassle to 'reset' the chip in the F250 we had before it's services.. and to be fair it wasn't that hard..

Probably prudent....you get replacement EGR valves at will under warranty! :) MR tell me they service many still under warranty and they are flashed....they reckon LR don't even realise, but I wouldn't take that chance.

Is it prudent to upgrade the intercooler when chipping ? I'm thinking from a dependability point of view, not so much performance since there seems to be gains in that anyhow.

Is there extra heat generated, or is it that the chip upgrade results in better efficiency ?

Warren is the boss at MR in Redcliffe - the local specialists. He (and I) only went with the flash upgrade. No difference in temp needle seen., engine "smells" the same etc!! There are other maps used if the other mods are done, so no - no actual need to do the lot if all you need is a base flash upgrade.

So when is Matilda getting her chip?:D

Next workshop day, we'll get $5 chips from the local greasy shop, that should make her perform.:p:D (And maybe some scallops to go with the chips)

Cheers, Mick.

There is performance and economy gains to be had with just re-map or intercooler up grade.

Most benefit is had by fitting both...:D
