engine racing

my 1997 range rover motor has started racing this morning. even when I take my foot off the accelerator it does not slow down I would welcome any ideas.......?

Sticking accelerator cable sounds most plausible. Check the rotary thingy on the intake manifold where the cruise and accelerator cables meet.

Have seen this model with bad engine ecu's a reset of the ecu can fix the problem for a short time but will return to a high idle situation.
I would suggest a reset first then see how you go for a whilem if it happens again it will need a replacement ecu.

Manifold leak?? If you get air entering the manifold from a leak it'll race!

Reset is a good idea Peter, and you would know these things :)

Irish - if you don't have a diagnostic tool such as a Faultmate or Nanocom, easiest way to reset a P38 is disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes, which "reboots" the computers/ECU's in the car and can clear all kind of weirdness that builds up over time. I had a 1995 P38 a few years back that needed a "reboot" every few months to clear weird stuff.

Yes, you will have to re-set the windows, sunroof, seats and mirrors(?) after re-connecting the battery. It is ok to leave the key in the ignition when you do this as long as you also leave the driver's door and window open in case the car decides to super-lock itself.
