Have just bought a 94 disco it's missing a complete flare set on LH REAR.
I will be giving the truck a suspension lift and fitting my 265/75R16 COOPER ST's under it and I want some flares to fit

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
I really am a bit lost and don't want spend the world on it.

Thank you in advance for any advice!!!!

Would probably help if you told us what type you wanted, standard (which will not fit 265/75-16's without a 'camel cut') or larger ones.

I don't mind really. I think the larger ones would look better.

What is a camel cut? Everyone on this forum talks about it but I don't really understand it fully

G'day Nico

Larger flares will require cutting of doors and mudguards, big job (scary IMHO). And they aren't cheap. But please yourself :)

A camel cut as i understand it (haven't done it, only have 225/75-16 STT's) is just taking off the lower part of the rear mudguard edge, making it a larger radius, so the tyre doesn't touch when flexed, google it and see what you see :)

Hi Nico, welcome to the forum.

as the others have eluded to, the are a couple of different styles of flares, so we will need to know what sort you have fitted to the other 3 wheel arches so we can tell you what sort you have and where you can get a replacement one from.

Re the camel cut, it's where you cut away a small amount of the bottom of the rear wheel arch so when the wheel compresses into the wheel arch when offroading, the tyre doesn't catch on the guard and bend it. There are plenty of topics here about it, search or the 'good oil' is your friend when new here ;)

Okay so I think I'm getting it. I'll keep the ones I got if I can get replacements. That sounds easier than cutting a massive amount of guard off for no reason.

So a camel cut is in effect rolling the guards I can do that easy!!!

So I have a photo not very clear but ill get a new one and post it on Friday when I back at my mates shop pulling the motor. Hope you can get an idea of what type they are.

Thanks guys you are really helping me out

A camel cut isn't rolling the guards, it is lopping the trailing edge off altogether.

Those flares look like they might be Disco II flares.

that pics a bit small and dark to see clearly what sort of flare they are, can you throw a better pic up please ???

yeah, its not rolling the guards, its cutting a small portion away completely....

cheers

Those flares look like they might be Disco II flares.I think they're the rubber type D1 flares, STC8498.

I doubt you're going to find one flare on it's own though.

Scouse is on the money, that's what type they are, good luck getting one of them though...

You can roll the gaurds instead of cuitting if you want, but it's easier and neater to cut IMO, and then you don't have to paint, either way you'll need to lose the 'lip'

Ok I understand now about camel cutting I think. I'll see how I go might look at both options as I'm handy with a dolly and hammer.

Those flares do look very similar I don't mind buying the set I just didn't even know where to start to look thou

Any ideas where to buy them for the best price?

Keep in mind that the flares will aslo need cutting to match the 'camel cut', there is a set of flares that came on later D1's that stop at the creas in the doors (where the plastic trim goes) so they don't go to the bottom of the guards,m they mihgt be better for your application.

Cheapest parts 99% of the time come from England...

no no no no, if you can afford it, get the proper moulded flares, each to their own but that dodgy flare bought by the metre belongs on Hilux's and Cruisers....not a Rover ;)

Moulded flares sure look better ,rubber ones are more practical if you plan to wheel your truck .The fibreglass ones crack easy and like in his case they hard to replace if you want just one . Not to mention dollars . Like you said each to their own and i own a bushpig :D

Ok I understand now about camel cutting I think. I'll see how I go might look at both options as I'm handy with a dolly and hammer.

For cutting you might want to try a grinder with a 1 or 1.25mm (thin) metal cutting wheel, leaves a nice edge. The thin blades do not heat up the paint like the thick ones do. Mark the line you want to cut with masking tape - I like to cut along the edge of the masking tape as it provides a nice clear line. Also maybe consider making a new bracket (some call them Z brackets) to push the back of the guard out too, I needed to do that even with a camel cut as my wheels have a wider offset than stock which yours might have too. Ilike the idea of having both acctually this is truck is only for towing and camping this will not be a commuter at all. So i think i will try to replace the original flares and do the camel cut for my tyres get some black sunnrasiers with like 15-25mm offset then add the rubber stuff to keep it leagal. Think it will look tuff. It's not going to ever be a toorak tractor with a winch, spotties and LED light bar plus the small winch in the rear bar to pull bigger logs on the trailer for the camp fire shes a campin' wag'n.:D
