Serious fuel leak.

On the way to work the other day.... slight smell of diesel but I was following a 4x4 from northern asia so dismissed it. Round a corner and the back end slips out. Glance in rear view and it all looks a bit blurry. Pull over and see cascades of fuel coming from engine bay. Plastic wrap off the TD5 and inspection. Fuel return line spewing liquid above the alternator. Anybody seen this before?

The hose going back to the fuel regulator? Yes, it can fail.

Yep quite common. As is the "green" banded HP fuel line out of the fuel pump chafing through. This happened to me while on holidays in the snowy mountains. Simply replace hose.
