After many hours on the phone to the engineering department of Qld transport :D
if you are restoring a land rover that had previously been converted to another motor and was blue plated for that conversion
you can revert to the original motor and get registration without another blue plate
IF and ONLY IF
there were no modifications done to the chassis or bodywork.
you just tick the unmodified box on the registration application form
and off you go...
ANY modification(s) to chassis or bodywork then you MUST have a blue plate to reregister the vehicle in QLD
hope it helps someone...

I guess this means that 109" Series Land Rovers which originally had the Rover six cylinder engine, (and used a complete kit which didn't modify the engine brackets on the chassis,) will be the only ones that don't require the re-engineering.
All the four cylinders where there was a scallop our of the front cross member will require a second retrofit blue plate.
Does modification include replacement parts, like the 6 cyl radiator, where the bottom outlet was often moved from one side to the other?

if you can fit orignal parts with out modification it appears you will be fine.
there are many 4cyl -> 6cyl holden fitments that dont modify anything and use a bolt onto the motor modified mount.
luckily mine was one of them :p
i replaced the radiator support panel with an original one and it is back to as built ...

My experience has been that if its a standard motor which has a different engine number from that last recorded all they do is have an inspector come out and confirm the engine number and away you go, no sweat , no dramas.

their own guidelines booklet contains the necessary requirements
http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/c792a0c9-92b1-43ee-933b-7bdd8b20842f/pdf_modification_motor_vehicles2.pdf
relevant bit being
in section one
Replacement engines
=============
Replacement engines that are offered by the
manufacturer as an optional engine for that model of
vehicle may be fitted. For such conversions, all
components, including suspension and brakes, must be
identical to those of a vehicle originally produced with
the optional engine.
this includes original equipment engines as long as no chassis or body modifications are needed.

and my vehicle went thru qld transport without a hitch thus proving the point beyond all doubt.

What did they make you register it as? Ute, Van, Wagon, ???
I was just down there with my 109 and they had my running round in circles jumping hoops until I told them to give me my stuff and I left.
I have the 109 troop carrier style S3, on the compliance plate it states 'utility' but then they said that I couldn't have a utility with a wagon body shape!? wtf! O and now they say that I have to have class 6 ctp as well. So I have to pay more ctp because i have less seats????????????

When I worked at Leyland Truck and Bus in Brisbane, all our retail sales were registered as utlities except the station wagons. This is quite logical as all are variants of the base model called by Landrover "the truck cab" with accessory bodywork fitted as required, hardtop canopy, soft top canopy etc.

When I returned from PNG about 36 years ago , I brought with me a FJ40 with removable hardtop. When it came to registering it they couldn't decide whether it was a Ute, station wagon or a sedan.Very few people had 4-wheel drives in those days ,and most were comercial vehicles belonging to farmers or companies. I lived in a small country town and they asked me to take it to Brisbane for inspection, where they decided it was a sedan or wagon,I can't remember which. However I insisted it was a Ute (because it was the cheapest to register.)They only agreed when I said I would remove the top and sides right there and then and put everything in the back. W.

Digging up an old one here though wanted to share my experience as it's a recent one.
My vehicle is currently rego'd in QLD, originally from WA, '66 SIIa 88" with a 202, 2 seats (aftermarket), and as a wagon.
The vehicle doesnt have any mod plates and the only item they questioned was if it was actually a wagon as the system didnt show a 2 seat wagon. I asked them what it was if it wasnt a wagon and she couldnt tell me. after a few minutes the lady returned and said she didnt know what it was but 'it's a wagon now'.
My intention is to install a rover motor once the 202 dies so will be interested to see what happens then. There doesnt appear to be any mods to the chassis or cross members so fingers crossed, no issues.
I am guessing the vehicle had never made it to QLD for rego before which more than likely helped my cause.
Cheers,
Stu.
