Can anyone tell me how the td6 performs? Before i picked mine up i looked at chipping options because all the tests i read said they were "slow" or "pedestrian" ect. but after having mine for a while now it goes fine.Ive not driven a v8 to compare it to but when you put your foot down it takes off, better than my chipped td5 disco anyway.Fuel economy is great as well. Are the v8s that much better?

I've had my TD6 for about 5 months now and really don't see any need to chip it, off the mark it's fantastic, mid range is good and at 110 if you put your foot down to overtake, it does it. Fuel consumption is great for a big Lump of a car.
Maybe for towing above 2.5 tons a chip might help, but for anything else I think it's a great diesel.

Its fine for the size of car and I don't have the urge to chip mine, but its certainly allot slower upto 60 from the lights than the 4.6 P38. I am used to toyota landcruisers burning me off at the lights and most of the time it doesnt bother me. I am mindfull not to thrash my trans and love getting combined fuel consumptions under 11l/100k.
Where I feel the stock TD6 excells is my petrol cars start struggling at about 85k's upwards and start lossing acceleration, whereas the TD6 seems to have the same level of acceleration from 60 to about 130 when it starts dropping off, I guess its just torque.

Just to answer your other question - yes, the V8 is much better - I test drove one while looking for mine, and I would have bought one in a flash if it wasn't going to be used as a daily driver. It gets off the mark much faster, and is heaps quieter - sounds good too. BUT, I bought the TD6, and love it, great fuel economy, good performance - an all round great machines.

I agree, standard TD6 goes better than a chipped TD5. The comments (mostly from UK?) about them being slow is subjective, what are you used to? What are you doing with it? If someone is used to a V8 petrol SUV or a nice sedan/hatch than it would seem a little slow and noisy – (I know mine feels slow compared to my wife’s car). I also think that if people are going to make a comment on a forum/blog about a cars performance, they are more than likely going to make negative comments about something they didn’t buy – most happy people don’t say anything – you only need to look up appliance reviews for this example, product x sold 4000 units but has a 90% negative review rate, there might be 20 reviews written by owners – that’s a lot of happy owners, granted not all silent owners would be happy but you see the point.
I would think a TD6 as a daily driver around Maryborough would be excellent – you’re not stop/starting that much in a small town (I’d love that).
Go back to when the TD6 was released, it won 4x4 of the year. I still have the article somewhere and the writers talked about their surprise with the TD6 performance, and how (quote) it stayed with the v8 petrol Landcruiser (2nd place award) all the way to its top speed. That year the petrol L322 was rated 3rd – it lost out to LC on value$.
Personally I think the standard TD6 is great, it’s just so much better chipped it and it’s not about full throttle performance.

I have been the proud owner of a 2003 TD6 now for just over 3 months. When i was looking to buy i test drove a couple of the V8 L322s and i did find they we smoother, quieter, and quicker off the mark.
However like others have said i needed this as my daily and the TD6 is very hard to beat on practicality! For a Diesel it is surprisingly quiet, gives fantastic economy, and will get up and go quick enough to keep up with the flow of traffic with ease. It is also very happy to motor along at highway speeds with very limited noise and motion lotion consumption... also cheaper to register :)
I wouldn't certainly wouldn't swap all these benefits for the V8! :)

With a zero to 100km/h time of 13.6sec, the TD6 is slow if you are looking for absolute performance. Being a diesel however it feels fine at when you are driving it at 60% and if you want in gear acceleration for overtaking and the like.
Compared to diesels that were around before its introduction, it was actually reasonable quick.

I slowed to stop as the lights ahead had changed to yellow  outside the Lang Park stadium in Paddington (Qld) a couple of weeks ago.
A black TDV6 D4 I'd been 'watching' in the side mirror decided he was in a hurry and kept going... he "planted it" about half way through the intersection and I'll swear there was a touch of blue smoke from all 4 tyres as they screeched and the vehicle took off along Castlelmaine St! I've never seen an AWD lose traction like that before and smoke the tyres...
I estimate his speed through the intersection was about 40-50kmh when he floored it... my opinion "performance is adequate!"

I have been for a few test drives in both the diesel and the petrol.
I must admit i was quiet startled by the spritely performance of the V8 and it certainly does have a nice note to it when you are putting your foot into it.
The TD6 is certainly no slouch in city traffic a tad noisy and some vibration there but i wouldnt call it intrusive by any means.
If the rego, insurance cost are lower and milage are better for the TD6 its got to be a good option.
I forget now but the 2 engines have different gearboxes? I think the V8 runs the ZF and the TD6 is a GM box?
If you chip either is it really worth the extra load on the trans and hastening a rebuild?

Oh, and just in case you were worried about it running out of puff when overtaking, it will do 160KMH - apparently (not that I have tried...)

More like 180kph:twisted:
Have to admit the TD6 is a great engine. Coming from an LS1 bommodore I thought I would get bored with the diesel power. Have had the car nearly 18 months and still love driving it..no intension to bother chipping it.
The economy is also a plus..great to have a car with decent range.
If I feel like more power...next one will be a supercharged V8:D

OK - I've now allocated my 2005 td6 HSE L322 to daily work transport duties.
We bought a 2007 tdv8 vogue yesterday.
It makes the td6 feel like the old fordson tractor we had 40 years ago!
The $25k that the td6 is worth really sums up its value/performance in real life terms.

When I first got my TD6 in 2004 (new) I thought about rechipping but never did and am so glad I did not. I have rarely towed anything larger that a 6 x 4 trailer and drive to speed limits. The auto lasted 114,000 k's. What would it do with more power?
I would certainly not recommend giving a TD6 with a GM transmission any more power.

Good advise. I would never chip mine. Glad the TD6 has more than enough power already. Had mine for 18 months and still not sick of it:D

Why on earth would you make those restrictions - I've had my td6 since new in 2005 with 185k on the odo - just about every trip involves lengths at 140 -180 kph, low range 4wd work through mountain tracks and I regularly tow large trailers of 3 tonnes or more. I haven't had any mechanical issues.
I had thought about chipping it but have now got an L322 tdv8 and it certainly does not need a chip. As a work truck the td6 has plenty of power.

You are very lucky.

"sounds responsible"
Incredible!! - are you are one of those that espouse the nanny state or are you implying something else? I guess being a resident of SA you have been drawn into a false sense of security where you consider that the state through its regulations can look after every aspect of your well being - I guess you didn't see the ch7 programme last night - if you had you would have a different opinion.
"very lucky"
What on earth does that mean? From what I've researched BMW had issues with early L322 front diffs (2202-2006) and transmissions (2002-2004). Both issues were rectified in subsequent models.

180kph:eek: wouldn't that get bad economy? I find cruising at 170kph gives the best.. I mean why wouldn't you? ;)
