Gday

Just looking to buy some 10mm synthetic rope off eBay

The buyer lists 30m to suit low mount and 40m to suit high mounts

Anyone with a Warn XD9000 how much have you got on it? I'm thinking of getting the 40m but not sure it will fit

Thanks

Jock

buy the 40M if you need to cut off the excess 10M cut that in half and then practice doing splicing and knot work in it.

1. you learn how to work the rope and what knots and bends work in it.
2. you wind up with a pair of bridal straps.
3. If your winch can take the full 40m then you dont wind up the 6 inches short of the anchor point that you would have been if you had planned the recovery when you had a 30m rope.

dont forget its about a minimum of 5 turns on the drum for synthetics depending on the surface of your drum. When you wind it on stop at 7 turns on, sit in the drivers seat and then mark the rope with a piece of low temp heat shrink or electrical tape about a foot out from where you loose sight of the rope.

If you can see that mark from the drivers seat, Dont put tension on the winch. (taking up slack is ok but if you can still see the mark check the drum for holding) Do the same when the first layer of rope is complete and about to start running back across. IF you're winching out as part of a recovery and hit that point let the recovery controller know OR asses what you're doing to make sure you can complete the job before you get down to the last marker.

No worries thanks for the heads up with the shrink fit thats a good idea

Be nice to know the length, it's $100 extra for the extra 10m

head to bunnings and buy some cheapy 10mm rope (10mm plasma will flatten out to about 6-8mm) then wind that on. Some winch retailers are now listing their winch line capacity with steel and synth a quick interporn search might give you what your winch will handle.

30 Metres is correct for a XD9000 any more and you could end up with damage , Oh by the way dont power out under load with synthetic rope on a low mount or you could end up with a sticky mess on your drum ;)

correct, lots don't realise this wth 90% of lowmount winches brake heat is a killer for rope.
just pay attention to duty cycle is all.

Go 8mm and get 40m on...

10mm is overkill on a 9000lb winch

In 10mm you'll only get 30m comfortably...

I know this because years ago I imported 2000 mtrs of 8mm and 2000 mtrs of 10mm and made and sold winch ropes up
